Afflictions of the The Wicked » Their persecution of saints, a cause of
And LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on those who hate thee, who persecuted thee.
God will hear, and respond to them, (even he who abides of old), Selah, [men] who have no changes, and who fear not God.
For, behold, I will shake my hand over them, and they shall be a spoil to those who served them. And ye shall know that LORD of hosts has sent me.
Since it is a righteous thing according to God to repay restriction to those who restrict you,
Afflictions of the The Wicked » Are for examples to others
But God will shoot at them. With an arrow they shall suddenly be wounded. So they shall be made to stumble, their own tongue being against them. All who see them shall wag the head. And all men shall fear. And they shall declare the work of God, and shall wisely consider of his doing.
I have cut off nations. Their battlements are desolate. I have made their streets waste, so that none passes by. Their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, so that there is no inhabitant. I said, Only fear thou me. Receive correction, so her dwelling shall not be cut off, [according to] all that I have appointed concerning her. But they rose early and corrupted all their doings.
However with most of them God was not well pleased, for they were strewn in the wilderness. But these things became our examples, for us not to be men who lust for evil things as those also lusted. Nor should we fornicate as some of them fornicated, and three thousand fell in one day. Nor should we challenge the Christ as some of them also challenged, and were destroyed by the serpents. And ye should not grumble as some of them grumbled, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Now all these things happened to those men for examples, and they were written for our admonition, to whom the ends of the ages came.

Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly. Suddenly he shall be broken, and that without remedy.
therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly in an instant.
having stood from afar because of the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, the great city, Babylon, the mighty city! Because thy judgment has come in one hour.

Yet the people have not turned to him who smote them, nor have they sought LORD of hosts.
In vain I have smitten your sons. They received no correction. Your own sword has devoured your prophets like a destroying lion.
I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the work of your hands, yet ye [turned] not to me, says LORD.
Afflictions of the The Wicked » Produce slavish fear
Distress and anguish make him afraid. They prevail against him as a king ready to the battle.
How they have become a desolation in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors.
Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste. Cry, ye daughters of Rabbah. Gird you with sackcloth. Lament, and run to and fro among the fences. For Malcam shall go into captivity, his priests and his rulers together.
Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, says the Lord, LORD of hosts, from all who are round about thee. And ye shall be driven out every man straight forth, and there shall be none to gather together the fugitives.

Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall come upon them, so that they will say in that day, H
Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue, though he spares it, and will not let it go, but keep it still within his mouth, yet his food in his bowels is turned. It is the gall of asps within him. read more.
He has swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again. God will cast them out of his belly. He shall suck the poison of asps. The viper's tongue shall kill him. He shall not look upon the rivers, the flowing streams of honey and butter. That which he labored for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down. According to the substance that he has gotten, he shall not rejoice.

The wicked man travails with pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.
For all his days are [but] sorrows, and his travail is grief, yea, even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.
For ye shall be troubled days beyond a year, ye careless women. For the vintage shall fail; the ingathering shall not come.
Afflictions of the The Wicked » Are often judicially sent
Fools are afflicted because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities.
How often is it that the lamp of the profane is put out, that their calamity comes upon them, that [God] distributes sorrows in his anger,
Why do thou cry for thy hurt? Thy pain is incurable, for the greatness of thine iniquity. Because thy sins were increased, I have done these things to thee.
Afflictions of the The Wicked » God holds in derision
LORD will laugh at him, for he sees that his day is coming.
I also will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when your fear comes, when your fear comes as a storm, and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he shall follow after them, and I will get for me honor upon Pharaoh, and upon all his army, and the Egyptians shall know that I am LORD. And they did so.
And I will enter into judgment with him with pestilence and with blood. And I will rain upon him, and upon his hordes, and upon the many peoples who are with him, an overflowing shower, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. And I will magnify myself, and sanctify myself, and I will make myself known in the eyes of many nations. And they shall know that I am LORD.

For this time I will send all my plagues upon thy heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, that thou may know that there is none like me in all the earth.
And it came to pass in the morning watch, that LORD looked forth upon the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of cloud, and troubled the army of the Egyptians. And he took off their chariot wheels, and they drove them with difficulty, so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel, for LORD fights for them against the Egyptians.
