Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him from among his brethren; and the Spirit of the LORD prospered David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, The men of Jabeshgilead buried Saul.
And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab and said, Peradventure is the LORD's anointed before him?
But now thy kingdom shall not stand; the LORD has sought a man after his own heart unto whom the LORD has commanded that he be captain over his people because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
And Samuel said unto him, The LORD has rent the kingdom of Israel from thee today and has given it to a neighbour of thine that is better than thou.
And thy house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee; thy throne shall be established for ever. According to all these words and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.
