A sound of terrors is in his ears. In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

While the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of LORD was kindled against the people, and LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

Surely thou set them in slippery places. Thou cast them down to destruction. How they have become a desolation in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors. As a dream from awakening, O LORD, when thou waken, thou will despise their form.

Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the lamp. And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment. And these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.


from men by thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world whose portion is in [this] life, and whose belly thou fill with thy treasure. They are satisfied with sons, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no pangs in their death, but their strength is firm.



I said in my heart, Come now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure. And, behold, this also was vanity.

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.


And, behold, joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine. Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die.

Therefore he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his drag, because by them his portion is fat, and his food plentiful.


Come ye, [they say], I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink. And tomorrow shall be as this day, great beyond measure.




Go now, men who say, Today and tomorrow we will go into this city, and will operate one year there, and will engage in trade and will get gain-- men who know not of the morrow. For what is your life? For it will be a vapor that appears for a little while, and then also vanishes away--


He takes all of them up with the hook. He catches them in his net, and gathers them in his drag. Therefore he rejoices and is glad.



When I thought how I might understand this, it was too painful for me,

But Abraham said, Child, remember that thou in thy lifetime received thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things. But now here he is comforted and thou are in agony.

And the harp and the lute, the tambourine and the pipe, and wine, are [in] their feasts, but they do not regard the work of LORD, nor have they considered the operation of his hands.

They sing to the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.


They spend their days in prosperity, and in a moment they go down to Sheol.




I have seen a wicked man in great power, and spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil.


Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who are secure in the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come!

Woe to you who are filled now, because ye will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, because ye will mourn and weep.

And at a set day Herod, having arrayed himself in royal apparel, and having sat on the tribunal, he made an oration to them. And the populace shouted, The voice of a god, and not of a man. And immediately an agent of Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And after becoming worm-eaten, he expired.


Then Haman went forth that day joyful and glad of heart. But when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, that he did not stand up nor move for him, he was filled with wrath against Mordecai. Nevertheless Haman restrained himself, and went home, and he sent and fetched his friends and Zeresh his wife. And Haman recounted to them the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his sons, and all the things in which the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the rulers and servants of the king.


And, behold, joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine. Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die.


Yet all this avails me nothing so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate.


And the populace shouted, The voice of a god, and not of a man.


Belshazzar the king made a great feast for a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.


Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, nor be thou envious against those who work unrighteousness.


that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the profane but for a moment?
