all Judea, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, went out to meet him, and having confess'd their sins, he baptized them in the river Jordan.
As the people were in suspence, every man imagining in his own mind that John might be the Messiah;
Then the inhabitants of Jerusalem, of all Judea, and the whole country about Jordan, came to him: and having confess'd their sins, they were baptized by him in Jordan.
he would have put him to death, but for fear of the people, who reckoned him a prophet.
for John instructed you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the licentious believed him. and tho' you saw that, you did not yet repent, so as to believe him.
if we should say, it was a human institution, we run a risk from the people. (for they all believed John was a true prophet.)
he said therefore to the people that crowded to be baptized by him, ye brood of vipers, who has prompted you to flee from approaching wrath?
if we should assert, it was a human contrivance, the populace would stone us; for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

then Jesus turned about, and seeing them following, said, what do you seek? they answered him, rabbi, that is to say master, where do you dwell? come, said he, and see. so they went and saw where he lodged, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two disciples, who had followed Jesus, after they had heard what John had said.
