So also ye, unless through the tongue ye give intelligible speech, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air! There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and no one of them is without signification. If, then, I know not the meaning of the voice, I will be to him who is speaking a barbarian; and he that is speaking, a barbarian to me. read more.
So also ye, since ye are eager for spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound in them with a view to the edification of the assembly. Wherefore, let him that speaks in a tongue, pray that he may interpret. For, if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it, then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. Else, if you are blessing with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the "Amen" at your giving of thanks, since he knows not what you say? For you, verily, give thanks well, but the other is not edified. I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all; but in an assembly I prefer to speak five words with my understanding, that I may instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
