John 18:1 (show verse)

When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden: into the which he entered with his disciples.

John 18:2 (show verse)

Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place, for Jesus oftentimes resorted thither with his disciples.

John 18:3 (show verse)

Judas then after he had received a bond of men, and ministers of the high priests, and of the Pharisees, came thither with lanterns, and firebrands, and weapons.

John 18:4 (show verse)

Then Jesus, knowing all things that should come on him, went forth and said unto them, "Whom seek ye?"

John 18:5 (show verse)

They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said unto them, "I am he." Judas also which betrayed him, stood with them.

John 18:6 (show verse)

But as soon as he had said unto them, "I am he," they went backwards and fell to the ground.

John 18:7 (show verse)

And he asked them again, "Whom seek ye?" They said, "Jesus of Nazareth."

John 18:8 (show verse)

Jesus answered, "I said unto you, I am he. If ye seek me, let these go their way."

John 18:9 (show verse)

That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, "Of them which thou gavest me have I not lost one."

Simon Peter had a sword, and drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

Then said Jesus unto Peter, "Put up thy sword into the sheath: shall I not drink of the cup which my father hath given me?"

Then the company, and the Captain, and the ministers of the Jews, took Jesus and bound him,

and led him away to Annas, first: For he was father-in-law unto Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

John 18:14 (show verse)

Caiphas was he that gave counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

John 18:15 (show verse)

And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and another disciple: that disciple was known of the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

John 18:16 (show verse)

But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple which was known unto the high priest, and spake to the damsel that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

John 18:17 (show verse)

Then said the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, "Art not thou one of this man's disciples?" He said, "I am not."

John 18:18 (show verse)

The servants and the ministers stood there, and had made a fire of coals. For it was cold, and they warmed themselves. Peter also stood among them and warmed himself.

John 18:19 (show verse)

The high priest asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

John 18:20 (show verse)

Jesus answered him, "I spake openly in the world. I ever taught in the synagogue and in the temple whither all the Jews resorted: and in secret have I said nothing:

why askest thou me? Ask them which heard me, what I said unto them. Behold they can tell what I said."

John 18:22 (show verse)

When he had thus spoken, one of the ministers which stood by, smote Jesus on the face saying, "Answerest thou the high priest so?"

John 18:23 (show verse)

Jesus answered him, "If I have evil spoken, bear witness of the evil: if I have well spoken, why smitest thou me?"

John 18:24 (show verse)

And Annas sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

John 18:25 (show verse)

Simon Peter stood and warmed himself, and they said unto him, "Art not thou also one of his disciples?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."

John 18:26 (show verse)

One of the servants of the high priest, his cousin whose ear Peter smote off, said unto him, "Did not I see thee in the garden with him?"

John 18:27 (show verse)

Peter denied it again: and immediately the cock crew.

John 18:28 (show verse)

Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas into the hall of judgment. It was in the morning, and they themselves went not into the judgment hall lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the paschal lamb.

Pilate then went out unto them and said, "What accusation bring ye against this man?"

John 18:30 (show verse)

They answered, and said unto him, "If he were not an evil doer, we would not have delivered him unto thee."

John 18:31 (show verse)

Then said Pilate unto them, "Take ye him unto you, and judge him after your own law." Then the Jews said unto him, "It is not lawful for us to put any man to death."

John 18:32 (show verse)

That the words of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

John 18:33 (show verse)

Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, "Art thou the King of the Jews?"

John 18:34 (show verse)

Jesus answered, "Sayest thou that of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?"

John 18:35 (show verse)

Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and high priests have delivered thee unto me. What hast thou done?"

John 18:36 (show verse)

Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world then would my ministers surely fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews, but now is my kingdom not from hence."

John 18:37 (show verse)

Pilate said unto him, "Art thou a King then?" Jesus answered, "Thou sayest that I am a King. For this cause was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. And all that are of the truth hear my voice."

John 18:38 (show verse)

Pilate said unto him, "What thing is truth?" And when he had said that, he went out again unto the Jews, and said unto them, "I find in him no cause at all.

John 18:39 (show verse)

Ye have a custom among you, that I should deliver you one loose at Easter. Will ye that I loose unto you the King of the Jews?"

John 18:40 (show verse)

Then cried they all again saying, "Not him, but Barabbas." That Barabbas was a robber.
