If you are really the Son of God, come down from the cross." And the high priests, too, made sport of Him, with the scribes and elders, and said, "He saved others but He cannot save Himself. He is the king of Israel, is He? Well, let Him come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. He has put His trust in God; let God deliver Him now, if He cares for Him, for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'" Even the robbers who were crucified with Him made sport of Him in the same way. So one of them at once ran off and took a sponge and soaked it in vinegar, put it on a stick and held it up to Him to drink. There was following Him also a vast throng of the people and of women who were beating their breasts and lamenting Him. But Jesus turned to the women and said, "Women of Jerusalem, stop weeping for me, but continue to weep for yourselves and for your children. Then people will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us up!' For if they do this when the wood is green, what will they do when it is dry?" Two others, criminals, were also led out to be executed with Him. When they reached the place called "The Skull," they crucified Him there; also the criminals, one at His right and one at His left. They drew lots to divide His clothes among them. Meanwhile, the people stood looking on. Then save yourself and us too!" But the other one reproved him and said, "Do you not fear even God when you are suffering the same penalty? And we are suffering it justly, for we are getting our deserts for what we have done, but this man has done nothing wrong." Then he went on to say, "Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingdom!" So He said to him, "I solemnly say to you, this very day you will be in paradise with me." It was already about noon, and darkness covered the whole country, and lasted until three o'clock, for the sun had failed to shine. And the curtain before the sanctuary was torn in two. Pilate had a placard written and had it put over the cross: "JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS." Many of the Jews read this placard, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. So the high priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "You must not write, 'The king of the Jews,' but write, 'He said, I am the king of the Jews.'" Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written!" When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took His clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier, except the coat, which was without a seam, woven in one piece from top to bottom, So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but let us draw for it to see who gets it." This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, "They divided my clothes among them, and for my clothing they cast lots." Now this was what the soldiers did. Near Jesus' cross were standing His mother and her sister Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. So Jesus, on seeing His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing near, said to His mother, "There is your son." Then He said to His disciple, "There is your mother." And from that very hour His disciple took her to his own home. After this, as Jesus knew that everything was now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, "I am thirsty." A bowl full of sour wine was sitting there. So they put a sponge soaked in sour wine on a stick and put it to His lips. As soon as Jesus took the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the high priests to betray Him to them. They were delighted to hear it, and promised to pay him for it. So he kept looking for a good opportunity to betray Him to them.

Even while He was still speaking, here came Judas, one of the Twelve, and with him a crowd, with swords and clubs, from the high priests and the elders of the people.

Then they arrested Him and led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest. Peter was following at a distance.

So the high priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council, and began to say, "What are we to do? For this man is certainly performing many wonder-works.

Then one of the Twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the high priests, and said, "What will you give me to turn Him over to you?" Then they paid him thirty pieces of silver.

As soon as it was daylight, the high priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes; and the whole council, after binding Jesus, took Him away and turned Him over to Pilate.

Then the high priests and the elders of the people met in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and plotted to arrest Jesus by stratagem and put Him to death. But they kept saying, "It must not be at the feast, for a riot may break out among the people."

One of the men with Jesus put out his hand and drew his sword, and with a thrust at the high priest's slave cut off his ear.

Then one of them struck the high priest's slave and cut off his right ear.

At that very moment, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up, and with him a crowd of men with swords and clubs, from the high priests, scribes, and elders. Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, "The one I kiss is He; seize Him and lead Him safely away." So when he came he went straight up to Jesus, and said, "Rabbi," and with much affection kissed Him. read more.
Then they laid hands on Him and arrested Him. But one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck at the high priest's slave and cut his ear off.

They took Jesus away to the high priest, and all the high priests, elders, and scribes met there. And Peter followed Him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest; he was sitting with the attendants and warming himself before the fire. The high priests and the whole council were trying to get evidence against Jesus to put Him to death, but they could find none, read more.
for although many men gave false testimony against Him, their testimonies did not agree. Some took the witness stand and gave this false testimony against Him: "We ourselves have heard Him say, 'I will tear down this temple built by men's hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.'" But even in this matter their testimony did not agree. Then the high priest arose in the midst and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer to make? What about this testimony they are giving against you?" But He kept silent and made no answer at all. So the high priest again questioned Him in these words, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" Jesus said, "Yes, I am, and you will all see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Almighty and coming in the clouds of the sky!" Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "What more evidence do we need now? Did you hear His own blasphemy? What do you think now?" And they all condemned Him as deserving to die. And some of them started to spit on Him and to blindfold Him and to hit Him with their fists, and say to Him, "Now play the prophet!" Even the attendants took charge of Him with slaps at Him. While Peter was down in the courtyard, one of the high priest's waiting girls came up,

So the high priests and the scribes continued to seek how they might put Him to death, for they were afraid of the people. But Satan entered into Judas, who is called Iscariot, who belonged to the circle of the Twelve. So he went off and discussed with the high priests and captains of the temple how he could betray Him to them. read more.
They were delighted and made a bargain to pay him for it. He in turn accepted their offer and began to seek a favorable opportunity to betray Him to them without exciting an uprising.

As soon as day came, the elders of the people, the high priests, and the scribes assembled, and brought Him back before their council, and said, "Tell us, if you are the Christ." But He said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I ask you a question, you will not answer me. read more.
But from today the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." Then they all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" And He answered, "Yes, I am." Then they said, "What more evidence do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth!"

Then the whole body of them arose and brought Him to Pilate. Here they began to make the following charges against Him: "We have found this fellow corrupting our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar and claiming to be a king himself."

But they shouted, "Kill Him! Kill Him! Crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Must I crucify your king?" The high priests answered, "We have no king but the emperor!" So Pilate then turned Him over to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus,
