John 2:1 (show verse)

Two days later a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee; the mother of Jesus was present,

John 2:2 (show verse)

and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

John 2:3 (show verse)

As the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine."

John 2:4 (show verse)

"Woman," said Jesus, "what have you to do with me? My time has not come yet."

John 2:5 (show verse)

His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

John 2:6 (show verse)

Now six stone water-jars were standing there, for the Jewish rites of 'purification,' each holding about twenty gallons.

John 2:7 (show verse)

Jesus said, "Fill up the jars with water." So they filled them to the brim.

John 2:8 (show verse)

Then he said, "Now draw some out, and take it to the manager of the feast." They did so;

John 2:9 (show verse)

and when the manager of the feast tasted the water which had become wine, not knowing where it had come from (though the servants who had drawn it knew), he called the bridegroom

John 2:10 (show verse)

and said to him, "Everybody serves the good wine first, and then the poorer wine after people have drunk freely; you have kept the good wine till now."

John 2:11 (show verse)

Jesus performed this, the first of his Signs, at Cana in Galilee, thereby displaying his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

John 2:12 (show verse)

After this he travelled down to Capharnahum, with his mother and brothers and his disciples; they stayed there for a few days.

John 2:13 (show verse)

Now the Jewish passover was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

John 2:14 (show verse)

There he found, seated inside the temple, dealers in cattle, sheep and pigeons, also money-changers.

John 2:15 (show verse)

Making a scourge of cords, he drove them all, sheep and cattle together, out of the temple, scattered the coins of the brokers and upset their tables,

John 2:16 (show verse)

and told the pigeon-dealers, "Away with these! My Father's house is not to be turned into a shop!"

John 2:17 (show verse)

(His disciples recalled the scripture saying, I am consumed with zeal for thy house.)

John 2:18 (show verse)

Then the Jews accosted him with the words, "What sign of authority have you to show us, for acting in this way?"

John 2:19 (show verse)

Jesus replied, "Destroy this sanctuary and I will raise it up in three days."

John 2:20 (show verse)

"This sanctuary took forty-six years to build," the Jews retorted, "and you are going to raise it up in three days!"

John 2:21 (show verse)

He meant the sanctuary of his body, however,

John 2:22 (show verse)

and when the disciples recalled what he had said, after he had been raised from the dead, they believed the scripture and the word of Jesus.

John 2:23 (show verse)

When he was in Jerusalem at the festival of the passover, many people believed in his name, as they witnessed the Signs which he performed.

John 2:24 (show verse)

Jesus, however, would not trust himself to them; he knew all men,

John 2:25 (show verse)

and required no evidence from anyone about human nature; well did he know what was in human nature.
