Jesus seeing him lying, and knowing that he had now been sick a long time, said to him, Do you wish to become well? The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is disturbed, to put me into the pool; but while I am coming another goes down before me. Jesus said to him, Arise, take up your bed and walk. And the man immediately became well, and took up his bed and walked. That day was the sabbath. The Jews, therefore, said to him that was cured, It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry the bed. He answered them, He that made me well, he said to me, Take up your bed and walk. They asked him, Who is the man that said to you, Take up your bed and walk? And the sick man knew not who it was; for Jesus had gone away, a multitude being in that place. Afterwards Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, you have become well; sin no more, lest a worse thing happen to you. The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well; and on this account the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he had done these things on the sabbath.

Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in a synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews always assemble, and in secret I have said nothing.
And they came again to Jerusalem; and as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, and scribes, and elders came to him, and said to him, By what authority do you do these things? or who gave you this authority to do them?
