Then said Paul, John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people, that they should believe in Him that was coming after him, that is, in Christ Jesus.

as it is written in the book of Esaias the prophet, saying, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight: every valley shall be raised, and every mountain and hill shall be lowered, and the crooked ways shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth: and all men shall see the salvation of God."

Jesus said unto them, Elias doth indeed come first, and shall set all things right.

As it is written in the prophets, "Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee:" and again, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight:" accordingly John came baptizing in the wilderness, and preaching the baptism of repentance in order to the remission of sins; read more.
and all the country of Judea, and those of Jerusalem, went out to him, and were all baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camels hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and he lived upon locusts and wild honey: and he preached, saying, There cometh after me one mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the holy Spirit.

and he shall drink neither wine nor any other strong liquor; and he shall be filled with the holy Spirit even from his birth; and many of the children of Israel shall he convert unto the Lord their God. And he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers unto the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to prepare for the Lord a people well-disposed.

And thou, my child, shalt be called the prophet of the most High; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, to make known salvation to his people, in the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the day-spring hath visited us from on high, read more.
to enlighten them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to direct our feet into the way of peace."

this man came for witness, that he might testify concerning the light, that through him all might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of the light.

Of Him did John bare witness, and publicly declared, saying, This was He of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me; for He was before me.

Therefore said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us: What dost thou say of thy self? and he said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, "Make straight the way of the Lord," according to Esaias the prophet. Now they that were sent, were of the pharisees: read more.
and they asked him, and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elias, nor a prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; that cometh after me, but is preferred before me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to unloose. These things passed at Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

And I knew Him not: but therefore came I baptizing with water, that He might be made known to Israel. And John testified saying, I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it abode upon Him. And I knew Him not: but He that sent me to baptize with water, said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on Him, the same is he that baptizeth with the Holy Spirit. read more.

John having preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John was fulfilling his course, he said, Whom do ye take me to be? I am not He: but behold there cometh one after me, the shoes of whose feet I am not worthy to unloose.

saying, There cometh after me one mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the holy Spirit.

Of Him did John bare witness, and publicly declared, saying, This was He of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me; for He was before me.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance; but He that cometh after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry: He shall baptize you with the holy Spirit and with fire. Whose fan is in his hand, and He will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and gather the wheat into his granary, but will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

John answered and said to them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but a mightier than I is coming, whose shoes I am not worthy to untie: He will baptize you with the holy Spirit, and with fire; whose fan is in his hand, and He will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather the wheat into his granary, but will burn up the chaff in unquenchable fire.

John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; that cometh after me, but is preferred before me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to unloose. These things passed at Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. read more.
The next day John seeth Jesus coming towards him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world. This is He of whom I said, After me cometh a man, who is preferred before me: for He was before me. And I saw it, and therefore testified that this is the Son of God. The day following John was standing, (and two of his disciples,) and looking upon Jesus as He was walking, he saith, "Behold the lamb of God."

And John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim; because there was much water there: and people came to him and were baptized. For John was not yet cast into prison. Now there arose a dispute between some of the disciples of John, and the Jews, about purifying. read more.
And they came to John, and said unto him, Rabbi, He that was with thee on the other side Jordan, to whom thou barest testimony, behold, He baptizeth and all the people come to Him. John answered and said, A man can take nothing upon him, unless it be given him from heaven. Ye your selves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but am sent before Him. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth with great joy at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore my joy is complete. He must increase, but I must decrease. He, that cometh from above, is above all: he that is of the earth, is earthly, and talketh like one of the earth: but He that cometh from heaven, is above all: and what He hath seen and heard, this He testifieth: and yet scarce any one receiveth his testimony. He that hath received his testimony, hath set his seal to this, that God is true: for He, whom God hath sent, speaketh the words of God: for God giveth the Spirit to Him not by measure. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all into his hand: wherefore he that believeth on the Son, hath eternal life; and he that obeyeth not the Son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.

But I tell you, that Elias is come, and they have done to him whatever they would, as it is written of him.

But I tell you that Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but did what they pleased to him: and so is the Son of man to suffer by them. Then the disciples understood that He spake to them of John the baptist.

And He said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all the things must be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and Psalms, concerning me. Then He opened their mind, to understand the scriptures: and said unto them, thus it is written, and thus it was necessary that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead on the third day;

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have contemplated, and our very hands have felt concerning the Word of life, (for this Life was manifested, and we saw it; and we testify and declare unto you that eternal Life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us) what we have seen and heard we declare unto you, that ye also may have communion with us: and our communion is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

But Peter, and the other apostles, answered, and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers hath raised up Jesus whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Ye know the report that was spread through all Judea, having begun from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached: concerning Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed by the devil: for God was with Him. And to this giving all diligence, add to your faith fortitude; and to fortitude knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience piety; and to piety brotherly affection; and to brotherly affection charity. For if these be in you and abound, they will not suffer you to be idle, nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he, that hath not these, is blind, or short-sighted, having forgot his baptismal purification from his former sins. Wherefore, my brethren, be the more diligent thus to make your calling and election sure; for if ye do these things ye shall never fall. For so an entrance shall be administered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Wherefore I will not neglect to put you always in mind of these things, though ye know them, and are established in the present truth. And I think it my duty, while I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by way of remembrance: knowing that I must soon lay down this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me. And I will endeavour that after my departure also ye may always be able to call these things to remembrance. For we did not follow artfully devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; but were eye-witnesses of his majesty.

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto Him, to shew to his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and He sent and signified it by his angel to his servant John, who bare witness to the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ, and to whatever He saw.

For we did not follow artfully devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; but were eye-witnesses of his majesty. For He received from God the Father honor and glory when a voice came to Him from the magnificent glory, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." And this voice, from heaven we heard, when we were with Him in the holy mount.

Then Peter said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou pleasest, let us make three tabernacles here, one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. And as he was speaking, lo a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him.

Then said Peter to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: let us make three tabernacles; one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: for he knew not what to say, for they were sore afraid. And there was a cloud overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, hear ye Him.

And as they were departing from Him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here, let us make three tabernacles, one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. And as he was saying this, there came a cloud and overshadowed them; and they were afraid, when they went up into the cloud and disappeared. And there came a voice out of the cloud saying, This is my beloved Son, hear ye Him.

The pharisees therefore said to Him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy testimony is not true. Jesus answered them, I have told you, and ye do not believe me: though the works that I do in the name of my Father, testify of me. But ye believe not; because ye are not of my sheep: for as I said unto you, my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. read more.

But Jesus said unto them, Many good works have I shewn you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered Him, saying, We do not go about to stone thee for a good work, but for blasphemy; and because thou being a man makest thyself God. Jesus replied, Is it not written in your law, "I have said, ye are gods?" And if it stiled them gods, to whom the word of God came, (and the scripture cannot be made void,) do ye say of Him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, thou blasphemest, because I said, I am the Son of God? If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in Him.

And Jesus answered them saying, The time is come that the Son of man is to be glorified. Though I tell you indeed and in truth, Except a grain of wheat fall into the ground and die, it remaineth alone; but if it die, it produceth much fruit. The people therefore that stood by, and heard it, said, That it was thunder: but others said, it was an angel spake to Him. Jesus answered and said, This voice came not for my sake, but for yours.
