The birth of [Jesus] Christ came about thus. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they came together she was discovered to be pregnant by the holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you will call him 'Jesus,' for he will save his people from their sins." All this happened for the fulfilment of what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: The maiden will conceive and bear a son, and his name will be called Immanuel (which may be translated, God is with us). After they had gone, there appeared an angel of the Lord to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Rise, take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt; stay there till I tell you. For Herod is going to search for the child and destroy him." So he got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went off to Egypt,
