Mark 5:1 (show verse)
They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.
Mark 5:2 (show verse)
And when he had come out of the boat, there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
Mark 5:3 (show verse)
who lived among the tombs; and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain,
Mark 5:4 (show verse)
for he had often been bound with shackles and chains. But the chains he wrenched apart, and the shackles he broke in pieces; and no one had the strength to subdue him.

Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out, and cutting himself with stones.

And when he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and worshipped him.
Mark 5:7 (show verse)
And crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore you by God, do not torment me."

For he had said to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"
Mark 5:9 (show verse)
Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" And he replied, "My name is Legion, for we are many."
Mark 5:10 (show verse)
And he begged him eagerly not to send them out of the country.
Mark 5:11 (show verse)
Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside.
Mark 5:12 (show verse)
So all the demons begged him, "Send us to the swine, that we may enter them."
Mark 5:13 (show verse)
So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out, and entered the swine; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and were drowned in the sea.

So those who fed the swine fled, and told it in the city and in the country. And people went out to see what it was that had happened.

And they came to Jesus, and saw the man who had been possessed sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, the man who had had the legion; and they were afraid.

And those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man, and about the swine.
Mark 5:17 (show verse)
Then they began to plead with Jesus to depart from their region.
Mark 5:18 (show verse)
And as he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged him that he might be with him.
Mark 5:19 (show verse)
Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."
Mark 5:20 (show verse)
And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him; and all men marveled.
Mark 5:21 (show verse)
And when Jesus had crossed over again by the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea.

Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name. And seeing him, he fell at his feet,
Mark 5:23 (show verse)
and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be healed, and live."
Mark 5:24 (show verse)
So Jesus went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged around him.

And there was a woman who had endured a flow of blood for twelve years,
Mark 5:26 (show verse)
and she had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she owned, and was no better but rather grew worse.
Mark 5:27 (show verse)
When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment.
Mark 5:28 (show verse)
For she said, "If I touch even his clothes, I shall be made well."
Mark 5:29 (show verse)
And immediately the bleeding stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
Mark 5:30 (show verse)
And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?"
Mark 5:31 (show verse)
And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, 'Who touched me?'"
Mark 5:32 (show verse)
And he looked around to see who had done it.
Mark 5:33 (show verse)
But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him in fear and trembling and told him the whole truth.
Mark 5:34 (show verse)
And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your disease."
Mark 5:35 (show verse)
While he was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue's house who said, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?"
Mark 5:36 (show verse)
But ignoring what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not be afraid; only believe."
Mark 5:37 (show verse)
And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
Mark 5:38 (show verse)
When they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, he saw a tumult, and people weeping and wailing loudly.
Mark 5:39 (show verse)
And when he came in, he said to them, "Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping."
Mark 5:40 (show verse)
And they laughed at him. But after he put them all outside, he took the child's father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was.
Mark 5:41 (show verse)
He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha cumi!" which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise."
Mark 5:42 (show verse)
Immediately the girl stood up and walked (she was twelve years of age). And they were overcome with great amazement.
Mark 5:43 (show verse)
He strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
