But when it was evening, His disciples came to Him and said, "This is a destitute place, and the day is over; send the crowds off to the villages to buy themselves food." Then Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks, and distributed them among the people who were sitting on the ground; so too with the fish as much as they wanted. When they had plenty, He said to His disciples, "Pick up the pieces that are left, that nothing be wasted." So they picked them up and filled twelve baskets with the pieces that were left from the five barley loaves, which were more than the eaters wanted. When the people, therefore, saw the wonder-works that He performed, they began to say, "This is surely the prophet who was to come into the world."

The apostles returned and met Jesus and reported to Him everything, how many things they had done and taught. And He said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and rest a little while." For there was an endless stream of people coming and going, and they had no time even to eat. But the crowds learned of it, and followed Him; and He welcomed them and began to speak to them about the kingdom of God and to cure the people who needed to be cured.
