The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Matthew 1:2 (show verse)
Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
Matthew 1:3 (show verse)
and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,
Matthew 1:4 (show verse)
Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon,
Matthew 1:5 (show verse)
Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse,
Matthew 1:6 (show verse)
and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah,

Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa,
Matthew 1:8 (show verse)
Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah,
Matthew 1:9 (show verse)
Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
Matthew 1:10 (show verse)
Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, and Amon the father of Josiah,
Matthew 1:11 (show verse)
and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
Matthew 1:12 (show verse)
And after the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
Matthew 1:13 (show verse)
Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor,
Matthew 1:14 (show verse)
Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud,
Matthew 1:15 (show verse)
Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob,
Matthew 1:16 (show verse)
and Jacob the father of Josnt the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.
Matthew 1:17 (show verse)
So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the exile to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the exile to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.
Matthew 1:18 (show verse)
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way: when his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 1:19 (show verse)
Then Josnt her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to put her to public shame, was resolved to divorce her quietly.
Matthew 1:20 (show verse)
But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 1:21 (show verse)
And she will give birth to a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

"Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel," which means, "God with us."
Matthew 1:24 (show verse)
When Josnt woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took his wife,
Matthew 1:25 (show verse)
but did not know her until she had borne a son. And he called his name Jesus.
