Elijah » Antitype of john the baptist
And he will go on before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to prepare for the Lord a people made ready."
and if you are willing to accept [it], he is Elijah, the one who is going to come.
And they said, {Some} [say] John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
And the disciples asked him, saying, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" And he answered [and] said, "Elijah indeed is coming, and will restore all [things]. But I say to you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did with him whatever they wanted. In the [same] way also the Son of Man is going to suffer [at] their hands."
And he said to them, "Elijah indeed does come first [and] restores all [things]. And how is it written concerning the Son of Man that he should suffer many [things] and be treated with contempt? But I tell you that indeed Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written about him."
And they asked him, "Then who [are] you? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not!" "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No!" Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" He said, "I [am] 'the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, "Make straight the way of the Lord," ' just as Isaiah the prophet said." read more.
(And they had been sent from the Pharisees.) And they asked him and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"

And after six days Jesus took along Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothing became bright as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him. read more.
So Peter answered [and] said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good [that] we are here! If you want, I will make here three shelters, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." [While] he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him!" And [when] the disciples heard [this], they fell down on their faces and were extremely frightened. And Jesus came and touched them [and] said, "Get up and do not be afraid." And [when they] lifted up their eyes they saw no one except him--Jesus alone. And [as] they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them saying, "Tell no one the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead." And the disciples asked him, saying, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" And he answered [and] said, "Elijah indeed is coming, and will restore all [things]. But I say to you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did with him whatever they wanted. In the [same] way also the Son of Man is going to suffer [at] their hands." And Elijah appeared to them together with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. read more.

(For he did not know what he should answer, because they were terrified.) And a cloud came, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!" And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus alone. And [as] they were coming down from the mountain, he ordered them that they should tell no one [the things] that they had seen, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. And they kept the matter to themselves, discussing what this rising from the dead {meant}. And they asked him, saying, "{Why do} the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" Now it happened that about eight days after these words, he took along Peter and John and James [and] went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face became different, and his clothing [became] white, gleaming like lightning. And behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah, read more.

And Paul said, "John baptized [with] a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the one who was to come after him--that is, in Jesus."
as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight! Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be leveled, and the crooked will become straight, and the rough road [will become] smooth, and all flesh will see the salvation of God.'"
Just as it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths!'" John was there baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. read more.
And all the Judean region and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem went out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. And John was dressed in camel's hair and a belt made of leather around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And he was preaching, saying, "One [who is] more powerful than I is coming after me, of whom I am not worthy to bend down [and] untie the strap of his sandals. I baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
And all the Judean region and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem went out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he must never drink wine or beer, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit [while he is] still in his mother's womb. And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go on before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to prepare for the Lord a people made ready."
And so you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go on before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins, because of the merciful compassion of our God by which the dawn will visit to help us from on high, read more.

This one came for a witness, in order that he could testify about the light, so that all would believe through him. That one was not the light, but [came] in order that he could testify about the light.
John testified about him and cried out, saying, "This one was [he about] whom I said, 'The one who comes after me is ahead of me, because he existed before me.'"
Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" And I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water, that one said to me, '[The one] upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him--this one is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' read more.
