Matthew 27:1 (show verse)
When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
Matthew 27:2 (show verse)
And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
Matthew 27:3 (show verse)
Then Judas, who had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
Matthew 27:4 (show verse)
Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see you to that.
Matthew 27:5 (show verse)
And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
Matthew 27:6 (show verse)
And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
Matthew 27:7 (show verse)
And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
Matthew 27:8 (show verse)
Therefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.
Matthew 27:9 (show verse)
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;
Matthew 27:10 (show verse)
And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.
Matthew 27:11 (show verse)
And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, You say so.
Matthew 27:12 (show verse)
And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
Matthew 27:13 (show verse)
Then said Pilate unto him, Hear you not how many things they witness against you?
Matthew 27:14 (show verse)
And he answered him never a word; so that the governor marveled greatly.
Matthew 27:15 (show verse)
Now at that feast the governor was accustomed to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they desired.
Matthew 27:16 (show verse)
And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
Matthew 27:17 (show verse)
Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will you that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?
Matthew 27:18 (show verse)
For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
Matthew 27:19 (show verse)
When he was sat down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
Matthew 27:20 (show verse)
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
Matthew 27:21 (show verse)
The governor answered and said unto them, Which of the two will you that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
Matthew 27:22 (show verse)
Pilate said unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus who is called Christ? They all said unto him, Let him be crucified.
Matthew 27:23 (show verse)
And the governor said, Why, what evil has he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
Matthew 27:24 (show verse)
When Pilate saw that he could gain nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see you to it.
Matthew 27:25 (show verse)
Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
Matthew 27:26 (show verse)
Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
Matthew 27:27 (show verse)
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.

And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
Matthew 27:29 (show verse)
And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and struck him on the head.
Matthew 27:31 (show verse)
And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off of him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.

And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.

And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
Matthew 27:34 (show verse)
They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and for my clothing did they cast lots.

And sitting down they watched him there;
Matthew 27:37 (show verse)
And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Matthew 27:38 (show verse)
Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
Matthew 27:39 (show verse)
And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
Matthew 27:40 (show verse)
And saying, You that destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself. If you be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
Matthew 27:41 (show verse)
Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, saying,
Matthew 27:42 (show verse)
He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
Matthew 27:43 (show verse)
He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
Matthew 27:44 (show verse)
The thieves also, who were crucified with him, reviled him the same way.
Matthew 27:45 (show verse)
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
Matthew 27:46 (show verse)
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Matthew 27:47 (show verse)
Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calls for Elijah.
Matthew 27:48 (show verse)
And immediately one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
Matthew 27:49 (show verse)
The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.
Matthew 27:50 (show verse)
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up his spirit.
Matthew 27:51 (show verse)
And, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks were split;
Matthew 27:52 (show verse)
And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints that slept arose,
Matthew 27:53 (show verse)
And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

And many women were there beholding afar off, who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
Matthew 27:56 (show verse)
Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.
Matthew 27:57 (show verse)
When the evening was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
Matthew 27:58 (show verse)
He went to Pilate, and begged for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
Matthew 27:59 (show verse)
And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
Matthew 27:60 (show verse)
And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulcher, and departed.

And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulcher.

Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
Matthew 27:63 (show verse)
Saying, Sir, we remember that this deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
Matthew 27:64 (show verse)
Command therefore that the sepulcher be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
Matthew 27:65 (show verse)
Pilate said unto them, You have guards: go your way, make it as sure as you can.
Matthew 27:66 (show verse)
So they went, and made the sepulcher sure, sealing the stone, and setting a guard.
