The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from man?" They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Why then did you not believe him?'

When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they declared God to be just, having been baptized with John's baptism. But the Pharisees and the Law scholars rejected the counsel of God, not being baptized by him themselves.

And they asked him, "Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" John answered them, saying, "I baptize in water, but among you stands one whom you do not know.

These things were done in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. They came, and were baptized.

This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.' When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke with other languages and prophesied.
