And He spake also this parable to some that trusted in themselves as being righteous, and despised others. Two men went up to the temple to pray; the one a pharisee and the other a publican. I fast twice a week, and I give tithes of all that I possess. But the publican standing at a distance did not presume so much as to lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, O God, be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for whoever exalteth himself shall be abased, but he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
