Midian's control predominated throughout Israel, and because of Midian the Israelis went out to find temporary hiding places for themselves in the mountains, caves, and fortified places.

He also strengthened the fortified cities, assigned officers to them, and stockpiled food, oil, and wine.


He brings down the high fortifications of your walls and lays them low; he will raze them to the ground, right down to the dust.

Therefore they say, "The blind and lame are never to come into the house." David occupied the fortress, naming it the City of David. He built up the surroundings from the terrace ramparts inward.
