as it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock that will cause some to fall, and whosoever believes in him shall not be ashamed.

Then he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock to cause a fall to both the houses of Israel, for a snare and for a net to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

and a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, even to those who stumble at the word, not obeying in that for which they were ordained.



And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? Then is the offence of the cross ceased.


Who shall believe our report? and upon whom shall the arm of the LORD be manifested? With all this he shall grow up before him as a tender sprout and as a root out of a dry ground. not that which goes into the mouth defiles the man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles the man. Then his disciples came and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this word?

Why? Because they followed it not by faith but, as it were, by the works (of the law); therefore, they stumbled on the stumblingstone;
