1 John 3:9-17

Whosoever is born of God doth not practise sin, because his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doth not practise righteousness, and he who loveth not his brother, is not of God: for this is the injunction which ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another: not as Cain who was of the evil one, and slew his brother;read more.
and why did he slay him? because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. Wonder not then, my brethren, if the world hate you: since we know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren: he, that loveth not his brother, remaineth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. In this we know his love, that He laid down his life for us: and we should be ready to lay down our lives for the brethren. But if any one, who hath the good things of the world, seeth his brother in want, and shutteth up his bowels from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

Hebrews 12:5-11

Have ye forgotten the exhortation, which speaketh to you as to sons, saying, "My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord, nor saint when rebuked by Him? for whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth." But if ye be without chastisement, of which all are partakers, then are ye bastards and not sons. Now if we had fathers of our flesh, who corrected us, and we gave them reverence; shall we not much more be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? For they indeed corrected us for a while, as seemed good to them; but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening seems for the present to be matter of joy but of grief: and yet afterwards it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those that are exercised thereby.
