Therefore I write these things while absent, that when present I may not use severity, according to the power which the Lord hath given me for edification, and not for destruction.

For though I should boast yet more of our authority, (which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction) I should not be ashamed:

Neither was there any indigent person among them; for as many as were proprietors of lands or houses, sold them and brought the prices of what were sold, and laid them at the apostles feet; and distribution was made to every one according to their necessity.

So the twelve called the multitude of the disciples to them and said, It is not seemly that we should leave the word of God and attend at tables. Wherefore, brethren, look out from among you seven men of good character, full of the holy Spirit, and of wisdom, whom we may appoint over this matter: but we will constantly attend to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.read more.
And the advice pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith, and of the holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus a proselyte of Antioch. nor sought we glory of men, neither of you, nor of others: though we might have expected maintenance, as the apostles of Christ.

For ye remember, brethren, our labor and toil; for working night and day, that we might not be burthensome to any of you, we preached among you the gospel of God.

Have I committed an offence in humbling myself that ye might be exalted? and in that I have preached the gospel of God to you gratis? I trespassed on other churches, receiving maintenance from them for your service. And when I was present among you, and in want, I was chargeable to no one. For the brethren that came from Macedonia supplied my want: and in every thing I have kept myself from being burdensome to you, and so I will keep myself.
