" Then Herod secretly sent for the astrologers, and found out from them the exact time when the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said to them, "Go and inquire particularly about the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, so that I may go and do homage to him too." So they obeyed the king and went, and the star which they had seen rise led them on until it reached the place where the child was, and stopped above it. When they saw the star, they were very glad, and they went into the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they threw themselves down and did homage to him. They opened their treasure boxes and presented the child with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Then, as they had been divinely warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their own country by another way.

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that no one who believes in him should be lost, but that they should all have eternal life.

Now these were the circumstances of the birth of Jesus Christ. Mary, his mother, was engaged to Joseph, but before they were married it was found that she was about to become a mother through the influence of the holy Spirit. But her husband, Joseph, was an upright man and did not wish to disgrace her, and he decided to break off the engagement privately. But while he was thinking of doing this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, and said, "Joseph, descendant of David, do not fear to take Mary, your wife, to your home, for it is through the influence of the holy Spirit that she is to become a mother.read more.

So when Joseph awoke from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had directed him, and took his wife to his home. But he did not live with her as a husband until she had had a son, and he named the child Jesus.

And the child grew up and became strong and thoughtful, with God's blessing resting on him.
