I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who affects pre-eminence over them, receiveth us not. Therefore if I come I will remember his works which he doth, with wicked words prating against us; and not content with these things, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and those who are willing he hindereth, and casteth them out of the church.

treacherous, wilful, puffed up [with pride], lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God; holding the form of godliness, but denying the power of it: from these men turn with aversion.

But a certain man, named Simon, lived previously in that city, who practised magic, and astonished the nation of Samaria, giving out himself as an extraordinary great personage: to whom all gave heed from the small to the great, saying, This man is the great power of God. And to him they attended, because he had of a considerable time astonished them by his magical tricks.

Then on a day appointed, Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, and seated on his throne, made an harangue unto them. And the populace shouted, It is the voice of a god, and not a man. But instantly the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not the glory to God: and being devoured with worms, he expired.
