And He said unto them, See to it that ye beware of covetousness; for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of his possessions.
No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or at lest he will be attached to the one, and neglect the other: ye cannot serve God and mammon:
And Jesus looking round about saith to his disciples, How difficultly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus repeating it, saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them, that trust in riches, to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence? even of your carnal appetites making war in your bodies? Ye desire, and ye have not: ye are envious, and jealous, and cannot obtain: ye fight and contend; but ye have not, because ye ask not.
Sell what ye have, and give alms: provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a never-failing treasure in the heavens, where no thief approacheth nor moth corrupteth: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
I know both how to be abased, and how to abound: in every place, and in all conditions I am instructed, both to be full and to be hungry, to abound and to be in want. I can do all things through Christ strengthening me.
Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites, who tithe even your mint, and anise, and cummin, but neglect the weightier matters of the law, judgement, mercy, and fidelity: these ye ought undoubtedly to practise, and not to omit the others.
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these shall be superadded unto you.
Render therefore to all what is their due: tribute to whom tribute is due, custom to whom custom, reverence to whom reverence, honor to whom honor. Owe no one any thing, but to love one another; for he that loveth others hath fulfilled the law:
