For many are called, but few elected.

The kingdom of the heavens is like a king-man, who made a marriage for his son. And he sent his servants to invite those who had been called to the marriage: and they were not willing to come. And again he sent other servants, saying; Speak to those who have been called, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatling are slain, and all things are ready: come to the marriage.read more.
And they being careless, went away, one to his farm, and another to his merchandise: but the rest, taking his servants, insulted, and slew them. And the king was angry; and sending his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and burnt up their cities. Then he says to his servants, The wedding is ready, but those having been invited were not worthy. Go ye therefore to crossings of the roads, and so many as you may find, invite to the marriage. And those servants having gone out into the ways, led in all whom they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was filled with guests.

And He said to him, A certain man made a great supper, and invited many; and at the hour, of the supper he sent his servants to say to those who were invited, Come; because they are now ready. And they all of one consent began to make excuse. The first said to him, I have bought a farm, and I have need having gone to see it: I pray thee have me excused.read more.
And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove the same: I intreat thee have me excused. Another said, I have married a wife, and on this account I am not able to come. And the servant coming, announced these things to his lord. Then the land-lord being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and lead in hither the poor and maimed and blind and lame. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou didst command, and yet there is room. And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the roads and hedges, and compel them to come in, in order that my house may be filled: for I say unto you, that no one of these men who have been invited shall taste of my supper.
