be not then carried about by various and strange doctrines; for it is good that the heart be established by grace, and not in meats, in which those that have been most exact, have not profited by them.
I wonder that ye are so soon removed from him who called you by the grace of Christ to another gospel: which is not another; but there be some that disturb you, and would subvert the gospel of Christ.
For the time will come, when they will not bear sound doctrine; but having itching ears, will heap up to themselves teachers after their own hearts: and turn away their attention from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
knowing me before, (if they would testify it,) that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a pharisee.
But there rose up, said they, some of the sect of the pharisees that believed, saying, that it was necessary to circumcise them, and enjoin them to keep the law of Moses.
having been circumcised on the eighth day, of the race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of Hebrews, with respect to the law a pharisee, as to zeal persecuting the church, as to the righteousness of the law blameless: but those things,
For the sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the pharisees acknowledge both.
And some of the Sadducees (who deny a resurrection) came to Him and asked Him,
But this I confess unto thee, that after the way, which they call heresy, so do I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law, and the prophets:
For having found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ring-leader of the sect of the Nazarenes,
But we would willingly hear from thee what thou thinkest: for as to this sect, we know that it is every where spoken against.
Now some that came down from Judea, taught the brethren, saying, Except ye be circumcised according to the law of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
They, who want to make a fair appearance in the flesh, would constrain you to be circumcised; only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For they, who are circumcised, do not themselves keep the law: but they would have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.
As I exhorted thee to stay at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge certain persons not to teach other doctrine, nor attend to fables and endless genealogies, which occasion debates, rather than pious edification in the faith: so do, and acquaint them that the end of that charge is charity, out of a pure heart, and a good conscience, and faith unfeigned:read more.
from which some having swerved are turned aside to vain discourses; desiring to be teachers of the law, though they neither understand what they say, nor what things they assert.
For there are many disorderly persons, vain-talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision; whose mouths must be stopped:
Who is a liar, if not he who denieth that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, that denieth the Father as well as the Son; for whosoever denieth the Son, hath not the Father: but he that confesseth the Son acknowledgeth the Father also.
Beloved, believe not every Spirit, but try the spirits, whether they be of God: for many false prophets are gone out into the world. By this ye may know the Spirit of God: every Spirit that confesseth Jesus Christ, who is come in the flesh, is of God: and every spirit that doth not confess Jesus Christ, who is come in the flesh, is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, which ye have heard was coming, and is already in the world.
But as to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together unto Him, we beseech you, brethren, that ye be not soon moved from your steadiness of mind, or troubled, neither by Spirit, nor by word, nor by letter, as from us, that the day of Christ is at hand.
And Jesus answered them, See that no one deceive you: for many shall come in my name saying, I am the Christ, and shall deceive many.
But Jesus answered them and said, Beware least any one deceive you: for many shall come in my name saying, I am the Christ, and shall deceive many.
And He said, Take heed that ye be not deceived; for many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and the time is near: but do not therefore go after them.
Then if any shall say to you, Behold here is the Messiah, or there; believe it not: for there shall rise up false Christs, and false prophets, who shall shew great signs and prodigies, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
And then if any shall say to you, Behold, here is the Christ, or, Behold, He is there, believe it not: for there shall rise up false Christs, and false prophets, who shall work signs and wonders, to seduce, if possible, even the elect.
Take heed least any one make a prey of you by philosophy and vain deceit, according to the tradition of men, after the elements of the world, and not after Christ:
That we may be no longer children fluctuating and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the artful insinuations of men, and their crafty methods of deceiving;
If therefore ye be dead with Christ from the elements of the world; why, as if living in the world, are ye subject to ceremonial ordinances, (such as "touch not, taste not, handle not," which all tend to corruption in the using,) according to the commandments and doctrines of men?
Now the Spirit expressly saith, that in latter times some shall apostatize from the faith, attending to seducing spirits,
By this ye may know the Spirit of God: every Spirit that confesseth Jesus Christ, who is come in the flesh, is of God: and every spirit that doth not confess Jesus Christ, who is come in the flesh, is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, which ye have heard was coming, and is already in the world.
Do ye therefore, beloved, as ye know these things before, take heed least being seduced together with them by the error of the wicked, ye should fall from your own stedfastness.
For there are many disorderly persons, vain-talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision; whose mouths must be stopped: who subvert whole families, teaching what they ought not, for shameful gain: as said one of themselves, a prophet of their own, "The Cretans are always liars, mischievous beasts, sluggish gluttons."read more.
This testimony is true: for which cause rebuke them sharply, that they may be found in the faith; not attending to Jewish fables, and the precepts of men who turn away from the truth.
and by artful speeches they will make sale of you for gain. Whose judgement is long since hastening, and their destruction doth not slumber.
But tho' we or an angel from heaven should preach to you any other gospel than what we have preached to you; let him be accursed. I say it again, if any one preach to you any other gospel than what ye have received, let him be accursed.
These are wells without water, clouds driven by a storm, for whom thick darkness is reserved for ever. For when they speak swelling words of vanity, they ensnare in the lusts of the flesh, through their lasciviousness, those who had indeed withdrawn from such as deal in error; promising them liberty, while they themselves are the slaves of corruption: for by whom any one is vanquished, by him he is also enslaved.read more.
For if, after they had escaped the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled and vanquished by them, their last state is worse than the first; for it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than when they knew it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. But it is happened to them according to the true proverb, The dog is returned to his own vomit, and, The swine that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
