For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, unless they wash their hands thoroughly, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders;
And they, taking the silver, did as they were instructed. And this account was spread abroad among the Jews, until this day.
And, having heard about Jesus, he sent to Him elders of the Jews, asking Him, that, having come, He would thoroughly save his servant.
Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the Jews' manner of purifying, containing, each, two or three firkins.
The Samaritan woman, therefore, says to Him, "How is it that Thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan woman?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans).
Jesus, therefore, said to those Jews who had believed on Him, "If ye abide in My word, ye are truly My disciples; and ye will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs distant. And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
The great multitude, therefore, of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not because of Jesus only, but that they might see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead. But the high priests consulted, that they might slay Lazarus also; because, on his account, many of the Jews were going away, and were believing on Jesus.
Jesus answered, "I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews assemble together; and in secret I spake nothing.
The Jews, therefore, (since it was the Preparation), that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, (for the day of that sabbath was great), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and they be taken away.
The Jews, therefore, answered and said to Him, "What sign dost Thou show to us, seeing that Thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." The Jews, therefore, said, "In forty-six years this temple was built, and wilt Thou raise it up in three days?"
After these things there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem, by the sheep-gate, a pool, which is called, in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. In these were lying a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, withered, [waiting for the moving of the waters:read more.
for an angel of the Lord went down at a certain period into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever, therefore, first, after the troubling of the water, stepped in, was healed of whatsoever disease he had]. And a certain man was there, who had been for thirty-eight years in his infirmity. Jesus, seeing this man lying, and knowing that already for a long time he had been thus, saith to him, "Do you wish to be made well?" The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no one, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool; but, while I am coming, another goes down before me!" Jesus saith to him, "Rise, take up your bed, and walk." And straightway the man became well, and took up his bed, and was walking. And it was the sabbath on that day. The Jews, therefore, said to him who had been cured, "It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed." But he answered them, "He Who made me well, the Same said to me, 'Take up your bed and walk.' They asked him, "Who is the Man That said to you, 'Take up your bed, and walk?'" And he who was healed knew not Who it was; for Jesus withdrew, a multitude being in the place. Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple. And He said to him, "Behold, you have been made well; sin no more, lest something worse befall you." The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who made him well. And, on this account, the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the sabbath. But He answered them, "My Father worketh even until now, and I work." For this cause, therefore, the Jews were seeking the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the sabbath, but also called God His Father, making Himself equal with God.
Jesus said to them, "I am the Bread of Life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes on Me shall never thirst. But I said to you, that ye have even seen Me, and do not believe. All that the Father giveth to Me shall come to Me; and him who comes to Me I will in no wise cast out;read more.
because I have come down from Heaven, not to do My Own will, but the will of Him Who sent Me. And this is the will of Him Who sent Me, that of all that He hath given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. For this is the will of My Father, that every one who beholds the Son, and believes on Him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day." The Jews, therefore, were murmuring concerning Him, because He said, "I am the Bread that came down out of Heaven." And they said, "Is not this Jesus, the Son of Joseph, Whose father and mother we know? How doth He now say, 'I have come down out of Heaven'?
And after these things Jesus was walking in Galilee: for He was not willing to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
The Jews answered and said to Him, "Say we not well that Thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?" Jesus answered, "I have not a demon; but I honor My Father, and ye dishonor Me. But I seek not My own glory: there is One Who seeketh and judgeth.read more.
Verily, verily, I say to you, if any one keeps My word, he shall never see death." The Jews said to Him, "Now we know that Thou hast a demon! Abraham and the prophets died; and Thou sayest, 'If any one keeps My word, he shall never taste of death!' Art Thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died? Whom makest Thou Thyself?" Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing. It is My Father Who glorifieth Me, of Whom ye say, that He is your God. And ye have not known Him, but I know Him; and, if I should say, I know Him not, I shall be a liar like you. But I know Him, and I keep His word. Abraham, your father, rejoiced to see My day; and he saw it, and was glad." The Jews, therefore, said to Him, "Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast Thou seen Abraham?" Jesus said to them, "Verily, verily, I say to you, before Abraham existed, I am." They took up stones, therefore, to cast at Him; but Jesus was concealed, and went out of the temple.
And, passing along, he saw a man blind from his birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus answered, "Neither did this man sin, nor his parents; but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.read more.
We must work the works of Him Who sent Me, while it is day. Night is coming, when no one can work. When I am in the world, I am the Light of the world." Having thus spoken, He spit on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and anointed his eyes with the clay, and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is interpreted, Sent). He went, therefore, and washed, and came seeing. The neighbors, therefore, and those formerly beholding him, that he was a beggar, said, "Is not this he that sits and begs?" Some said, "This is he;" others said, "No, but he is like him;" he said, "I am he." They said, therefore, to him, "How then were your eyes opened?" He answered, "The Man Who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, 'Go to Siloam, and wash;' having gone, therefore, and washed, I received sight." And they said to him, "Where is He?" He says, I know not." They bring to the Pharisees him who was once blind. And it was a sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay, and anointed his eyes. Again, therefore, the Pharisees also asked him, how he received sight. And he said to them, "He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and see." Some of the Pharisees, therefore, said, "This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the sabbath." Others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" And there was a division among them. They say, therefore, to the blind man again, "What do you say about Him, seeing that He opened your eyes?" And he said, "He is a Prophet." The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him, that he was blind, and received sight, until they called the parents of him who received sight, and asked them, "Is this your son, who ye say, was born blind? How, then, does he now see?" His parents, therefore, answered and said, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but how he now sees, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age; he will speak for himself." These things said his parents, because they were fearing the Jews; for the Jews had agreed already, that, if any one should confess Him to be Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. On this account, his parents said, "He is of age; ask him." Therefore, they called a second time the man who was blind, and said to him, "Give glory to God: we know that this Man is a sinner." He, therefore, answered, "Whether He is a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that, though I was blind, now I see." They said, therefore, to him, "What did He do to you? how did He open your eyes?" He answered them, "I told you already, and ye did not hear; why do ye wish to hear it again? Do ye also wish to become His disciples?" And they reviled him, and said, "You are His disciple; but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God hath spoken to Moses; but, as to this Man, we know not whence He is." The man answered and said to them, "Why, in this is the wonder, that ye do not know whence He is, and He opened my eyes. We know that God heareth not sinners; but, if any one is a worshiper of God, and does His will, him He heareth. From remotest antiquity, it was never heard that any one opened the eyes of one born blind! If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing." They answered and said to him, You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us!" And they cast him out.
Then occurred the feast of dedication in Jerusalem; and it was winter; and Jesus was walking in the temple in Solomon's porch. The Jews, therefore, came round about Him, and said to Him, "How long dost Thou hold us in suspense? If Thou art the Christ, tell us plainly."read more.
Jesus answered them, "I told you, and ye did not believe: the works that I do in My Father's name, these testify concerning Me. But ye believe not, because ye are not of My sheep. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give to them eternal life; and they shall never perish, nor shall any one snatch them out of My hand. My Father, Who hath given them to Me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are One." The Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, "Many good works did I show you from My Father; for which of those works do ye stone Me?" The Jews answered Him, "For a good work we stone Thee not, but for blasphemy, and because, Thou, being a Man, makest Thyself God!"
So the band, and the chief captain, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus, and bound Him, and led Him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. And it was Caiaphas who counseled the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
And after these things Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly through fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. He came, therefore, and took away His body.
When, therefore, it was evening, on that day, the first day of sabbaths; and, when, through fear of the Jews, the doors were shut, where the disciples were; Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith to them, "Peace be to you!"
And Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, "JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS." This title, therefore, many of the Jews read; because the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, in Greek. The high priests of the Jews, therefore, said to Pilate, "Write not, 'The King of the Jews,' but that He said, I am King of the Jews."
And Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the King, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is He that is born King of the Jews, For we saw His star in the east, and we came to do Him homage."
And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, "Art Thou the King of the Jews?" And Jesus said to him, "You say it."
And Pilate asked Him, "Art Then the King of the Jews?" And He, answering, saith to him, "You say it."
Pilate, therefore, entered again into the Praetorium, and called Jesus, and said to Him, "Art Thou the King of the Jews?"
Then the soldiers of the governor, taking Jesus into the Praetorium, gathered to Him the whole band. And, having stripped Him, they put on Him a scarlet robe; and, having platted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and, kneeling before Him, they mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"read more.
And, having spit on Him, they took the reed, and smote Him on the head; and, when they mocked Him, they took off the robe from Him, and put on His own garments, and led Him away to crucify Him.
And the soldiers led Him away within the court, which is the Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. And they clothe Him with purple; and, having platted a crown of thorns, they put it on Him. And they began to salute Him, "Hail King of the Jews!"read more.
And they were smiting His head with a reed, and kept spitting on Him; and, bowing their knees, they were worshiping Him! And, when they mocked Him, they took from Him the purple, and put on Him His own garments. And they lead Him out to crucify Him.
Then Pilate, therefore, took Jesus, and scourged Him. And the soldiers, having platted a crown of thorns, placed it upon his head, and put on Him a purple robe; and they kept coming to Him, and saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they were giving Him blows with a rod.read more.
And Pilate went out again, and says to them, "Behold, I bring Him out to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in Him." Jesus, therefore, came forth without, wearing the thorn-crown, and the purple robe. And he says to them, "Behold, the Man!" When, therefore, the high priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out, "Crucify! crucify!" Pilate says to them, "Take ye Him, and crucify Him; for I find not a crime in Him."
Now at the feast he was wont to release to them one prisoner, whom they asked of him. And there was one called Barabbas, bound with the insurgents, who, in the insurrection, had committed murder. And, coming up, the multitude began to ask him to do as he was wont to do to them.read more.
And Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you wish me to release to you the King of the Jews?" (For he was coming to understand that because of envy the high priests had delivered Him up). But the high priests stirred up the multitude, that he should rather release to them Barabbas. And Pilate, again answering, said to them, "What, then, shall I do to Him Whom ye call the King of the Jews?" And they cried out again, "Crucify Him!" And Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil did He do?" But they cried out vehemently, "Crucify Him!"
Pilate says to Him, "What is truth?" And, having said this, he went out again to the Jews, and says to them, "I find no crime in Him. But ye have a custom, that I should release to you one at the passover. Do ye wish, therefore, that I release to you the King of the Jews?" They cried out, therefore, again, saying, "Not this Man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
Those, therefore, who were dispersed by reason of the tribulation that arose about Stephen, traveled as far as Phoenicia, and Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to none but Jews only.
