For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he swore by himself, saying: Most surely will I abundantly bless you, and abundantly multiply you.

For, verily, men swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all contradiction. Wherefore, God, being more abundantly willing to show to the heirs of his promise the immutability of his purpose, inter posed an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled to lay hold on the hope set before us;

in order to show the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant, the oath which he swore to Abraham our father,

Where fore, I was angry with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: so that I swore in my anger, They shall not enter into my rest.
