Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes, and to his disciples, saying: The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses seat: therefore, all things that they command you to observe, observe and do. But do not according to their works: for they command, and do not.

(for the Pharisees and all the Jews eat not, unless they wash their hands carefully, because they hold the tradition of the elders: and when they come from the market, they do not eat, unless they immerse themselves. And it came to pass, that he was going on the sabbath day through the fields of grain: and his disciples began, as they went, to pull the ears of grain. And the Pharisees said to him: See, why are they doing on the sabbath-day what is not lawful?

And it came to pass, on the first sabbath after the second day of the feast, that he was going through the fields of grain; and his disciples pulled the ears and ate, rubbing them in their hands. And some of the Pharisees said to them: Why are you doing what it is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had performed a cure on the sabbath-day, answered and said to the multitude: There are six days in which work ought to be done; on these, therefore, come and be cured, and not on the sabbath-day. Then the Lord answered him and said:

Then came to him the disciples of John, saying: Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples fast not?

And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees were in the habit of fasting; and they came, and said to him: Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples fast not?

And they said to him: Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink?

And he spoke this parable to some, who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and who despised others. Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, its justice, its mercy, and its faithfulness. These you ought to have done, and those you ought not to have neglected.
