Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes, and to his disciples, saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in the seat of Moses. All, therefore, whatever they bid you, do and observe; but do not according to their works; for they say, and do not.

At that time Jesus went on the sabbath through the grainfields; and his disciples were hungry, and began to pluck the ears of grain, and to eat. But the Pharisees, seeing it, said to him, Lo! thy disciples are doing that which it is not lawful to do on the sabbath.

And it came to pass, that he was going through the grainfields on the sabbath, and his disciples began, as they went along, to pluck the ears of grain. And the Pharisees said to him, See, why are they doing on the sabbath that which is not lawful?

And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he was going through grainfields; and his disciples plucked the ears of grain, and ate them, rubbing them with their hands. And some of the Pharisees said, Why are ye doing that which it is not lawful to do on the sabbath?

But the ruler of the synagogue answering, being filled with indignation because Jesus had performed a cure on the sabbath, said to the multitude, There are six days in which it is proper to work; on those therefore come and be cured, and not on the sabbathday.

Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast, and thy disciples fast not?

And the disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting; and they come and say to him, Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, and thy disciples fast not?

And they said to him, The disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink.

And to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised all others, he spoke this parable: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
