42 Bible Verses about Punishment, By God

have you forgot the exhortation which is address'd to you, as to children? "my son, despise not thou the chastning of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him. for whom the Lord loveth, he chastises, and scourgeth every son whom he receives." if you are to endure chastisement, God treats you as his children: for where's the son whom his father does not chastise?

happy is he that can stand the tryal: for when he has undergone the test, he shall receive that crown of life which the Lord has promised to those that love him.

as many as I love, I rebuke and chastise: be warm therefore with zeal, and repent.

hence it is, that many are weak and sickly among you, and no small number now sleep in their graves. for if we made such a discrimination, we should not be punished. but when we are punished, we are chastised by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

there the divine wrath is revealed from heaven against all impiety, and injustice of men, who wickedly suppress the truth.

let not this surprize you: for the time is coming, when all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and they that have done good, shall rise to the possession of life; and they that have done evil, shall rise to their condemnation.

let no man mislead you by vain reasonings: for it is for these vices, that the wrath of God lights upon the incredulous.

these are vices which draw down the divine vengeance upon unbelieving nations;

whilst they flatter themselves with peace and safety, destruction shall fall upon them, like the pangs of a woman in travail, and they shall not escape.

for if the law deliver'd by angels was put in execution, and every transgression and disobedience was justly punish'd as it deserv'd; how shall we escape, if we neglect that salutary doctrine? which was first published by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those that heard him;

let not this surprize you: for the time is coming, when all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and they that have done good, shall rise to the possession of life; and they that have done evil, shall rise to their condemnation. Of my self I can do nothing: according to my instructions I judge: and my judgment is just; because I do not consult my own will, but the will of the father who hath sent me.

but say you, "if our unfaithfulness displays the veracity of God, what shall we say? is it not injustice in God to inflict punishment?" not at all: for then how could God judge the world? "but, say you, if the veracity of God hath appeared more illustrious thro' my unfaithfulness, why then am I condemned as a sinner?read more.
and why may we not do evil, that good may come?" which is slanderously reported to be our maxim, by some, whose condemnation is just.

who, when he was reviled, did not revile again: when he was in his sufferings, he did not threat, but referr'd his cause to the righteous judge.

and I heard the angel of the waters say, "thou art just, who art, and hast always been holy, because thou hast judged thus: for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets: thou hast given them blood to drink; for they have deserv'd it." and I heard another from the altar say, "oh! Lord God almighty, true and just are thy judgments."

but I will inform you whom you should fear: fear him, who after he has kill'd, has power to precipitate into hell; yes, I advise you, fear him.

fear not those who can only kill the body, but cannot hurt the soul: rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.

If your right eye insnare you, it is better to pull it out, and to suffer the loss of that single part, than that thy whole body should be cast into Gehenna. and if thy right hand insnare thee, it is better to saw it off, and to suffer the loss of that single part, than that thy whole body should be thrown into Gehenna.

but I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause, shall be punish'd by the tribunal: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be punish'd by the Sanhedrim: but whosoever shall say, thou fool, shall be punish'd by the fire of Gehenna.

as then the tares are gathered and burnt in the fire; so shall it be at the conclusion of the age. the son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all that make others offend, and those who do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.read more.
then shall the just shine out like the sun, in the kingdom of their father. he that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

if even thy hand should make thee transgress, saw it off, and cast it away, it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than to have both hands and go into Gehenna, the unextinguishable fire:

at length the beggar died: and was conveyed by the angels to Abraham's bower. the rich man died too, and was buried. and being in the infernal regions of torments, he lift up his eyes, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bower. and he cry'd out, saying, father Abraham, take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

and death and the grave were cast into the lake of fire: this is the second death. and whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.

and then will I make this declaration to them: I never knew you: depart from me ye that have practised iniquity.

then said the king to the servants, bind him hand and foot, take him away, and turn him out in the dark: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

then will he say to those on the left, depart from me ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.

strive to enter in at the narrow gate: for I declare unto you, that many shall try to get in, and shall not be able. when once the master of the family is enter'd in, and has fastned the door, you will stand without beating at the door, and cry, Lord, Lord, let us in: but he will answer, you are strangers to me. then you will say, we have eat, and drank with you, and you have taught in our streets.read more.
but he will answer, I tell you, you are strangers to me: depart from me, ye workers of iniquity. there will be weeping, and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

and nothing that is impure, no one that is guilty of any abomination, or a lye, shall ever enter there: but they alone who are written in the lamb's book of life.

in flaming fire, to take vengeance on those, who know not God, and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: the Lord shall punish them with everlasting destruction, when he shall appear in the glory of his power,

and these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

the smoke of their torment shall ascend for ever and ever: they who worship the beast or his image, they who receive the mark of his name, shall have no rest either day or night."

he that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith to the churches, he that overcometh, shall not be hurt by the second death."

happy and holy are they that have part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God, and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

but the fearful, and incredulous, the abominable, the murderer, the licentious, the poisoner, the idolater, and every lyar shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: this is the second death."

who yet devour widows estates under the shew of making long prayers, such shall receive greater condemnation.

who under the pretext of their long prayers devour the fortunes of widows. wherefore they shall be punish'd with greater severity.

I declare unto you, Tyre and Sidon shall be treated with less severity at the day of judgment than you.

but the servant, who knows his master's will, and prepares not himself, nor executes his orders, shall receive many stripes. whereas he that does not know it, and does things worthy of chastisement, shall receive fewer stripes. for to whom much is given, of him shall much be required, and the more a man has been trusted, the greater will be the demand.

and he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil and satan, and bound him for a thousand years,

nor must he be a new convert; for fear he should be elated with pride, and so involve himself in the same ruin as the devil.

Since then the children were made subject to a state of mortality, so he himself likewise was subject to the same condition: that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, call'd the devil or satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were precipitated with him.

the devil that seduced them, shall be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
