and this is the subject of their condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. for every one that doth evil, hateth the light, and shunneth the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

therefore they could not believe, according to what Esaias said in another place, "he hath blinded their eyes, and hardned their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them."

This I say therefore, and conjure you by the Lord not to live for the future as other Gentiles do, in the vanity of their minds, which are overspread with darkness, and averse to a religious life, thro' their innate ignorance and obduracy: who without remorse, have abandon'd themselves to brutality, in gratifying every lewd unnatural passion.
