and said to his servants, This is John the baptist, he is certainly risen from the dead, and therefore miraculous things are done by him:
And king Herod heard of Him, (for his name was spread abroad,) and he said, John the baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore miraculous powers appear in him.
but no other presumed to join himself to them; however the people magnified them.
for as I was passing along, and looking at what ye worshipped, I found an altar on which there was inscribed, "To the unknown God." Whom therefore ye worship unknown, Him do I declare unto you.
And when Simon saw that the holy Spirit was given by the imposition of the hands of the apostles, he offered them money, saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the holy Spirit.
And as they were thus speaking, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be to you. But they being terrified and frighted, thought they saw a spirit.
And they said to her, Thou art mad: but she confidently affirmed that it was so. Then said they, It is his angel.
Then some of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name the name of the Lord Jesus over those that had evil spirits, saying, "We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preacheth."
And Paul having gathered together a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came out a viper from the heat, and fastened on his hand. And when the barbarians saw the venomous creature hanging on his hand, they said to one another, This man is certainly a murderer, whom, though he hath been saved from the sea, yet justice suffereth not to live.
And the people, seeing what Paul had done, lifted up their voice, saying in the Lycaonian tongue, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men. And they called Barnabas Jupiter, and Paul Mercury; because he was the chief speaker. And the priest of Jupiter, whose image was before the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, and with the people would have offered sacrifices to them.
But he shook off the creature into the fire, and suffered no hurt. They however were expecting that he would swell, or suddenly fall down dead: but when they had waited a good while, and saw no hurt come to him, they changed their opinion and said that he was a god.
And I John am he who saw and heard these things: and when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel, who shewed me these things. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: for I am a fellow-servant of thine, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of those who observe the words of this book: worship God.
As I exhorted thee to stay at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge certain persons not to teach other doctrine, nor attend to fables and endless genealogies, which occasion debates, rather than pious edification in the faith:
These things teach and exhort. If any one teach otherwise, and adhere not to the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the doctrine which is according to godliness; he is proud, knowing nothing, but is delirious about questions and strifes of words: from which cometh envy, contention, calumnies, wicked suspicions, perverse debates of men corrupted in mind,
Now the Spirit expressly saith, that in latter times some shall apostatize from the faith, attending to seducing spirits,
And the rest of the men, who were not killed by these plagues, yet repented not of the works of their hands, so as not to worship demons, and idols of gold, and of silver, and of brass, and of stone, and of wood; which can neither see, nor hear, nor walk: neither did they repent of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their whoredom, nor of their thefts.
