And his lord was angry, and delivered him to the jailers, till he should pay all that was due him.

And the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates stripped off their clothes, and gave command to beat them with rods. And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, and charged the jailer to keep them securely. And having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

Women received their dead raised to life again: but others were beat to death, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection; others had trial of mockings and scourgings, bonds also, and imprisonments. They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, they were tempted, they were slain with the sword: they went about in. sheep-skins, in goat-skins, being destitute, afflicted, oppressed with evils,read more.
(of whom the world was not worthy,) wandering in deserts, and in mountains, and in caverns, and in dens of the earth.

And they were permitted, not to kill them, but to torment them five months; and the torment inflicted by them was like the torment inflicted by a scorpion, when he stings a man.
