'Against' in the Bible

I have heard the gossip of many;terror is on every side.When they conspired against me,they plotted to take my life.

Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers,and assure me: “I am your deliverance.”

But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;they gathered against me.Assailants I did not knowtore at me and did not stop.

For they do not speak in friendly ways,but contrive deceitful schemesagainst those who live peacefully in the land.

They open their mouths wide against me and say,“Aha, aha! We saw it!”

The wicked person schemes against the righteousand gnashes his teeth at him.

Vindicate me, God, and defend my causeagainst an ungodly nation;rescue me from the deceitful and unjust man.

“Listen, My people, and I will speak;I will testify against you, Israel.I am God, your God.

Against You—You alone—I have sinnedand done this evil in Your sight.So You are right when You pass sentence;You are blameless when You judge.

For strangers rise up against me,and violent men seek my life.They have no regard for God.Selah

Now it is not an enemy who insults me—otherwise I could bear it;it is not a foe who rises up against me—otherwise I could hide from him.

Though many are against me,He will redeem me from my battle unharmed.

My friend acts violentlyagainst those at peace with him;he violates his covenant.

My adversaries trample me all day,for many arrogantly fight against me.

They spoke against God, saying,“Is God able to provide food in the wilderness?

Therefore, the Lord heard and became furious;then fire broke out against Jacob,and anger flared up against Israel

God’s anger flared up against them,and He killed some of their best men.He struck down Israel’s choice young men.

Do not hold past sins against us;let Your compassion come to us quickly,for we have become weak.

I would quickly subdue their enemiesand turn My hand against their foes.”

For they have conspired with one mind;they form an alliance against You—

Remember, Lord, the ridicule against Your servants—in my heart I carry abuse from all the peoples—

They will support you with their handsso that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

Who stands up for me against the wicked?Who takes a stand for me against evildoers?

He called down famine against the landand destroyed the entire food supply.

So He raised His hand against them with an oaththat He would make them fall in the desert

They provoked the Lord with their deeds,and a plague broke out against them.

Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against His people,and He abhorred His own inheritance.

For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me;they speak against me with lying tongues.

Let this be the Lord’s payment to my accusers,to those who speak evil against me.

Though princes sit together speaking against me,Your servant will think about Your statutes;

then they would have swallowed us alivein their burning anger against us.

Since my youth they have often attacked me,but they have not prevailed against me.

He sent signs and wonders against you, Egypt,against Pharaoh and all his officials.

Lord, don’t I hate those who hate You,and detest those who rebel against You?

Let the righteous one strike me—it is an act of faithful love;let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head;let me not refuse it.Even now my prayer is againstthe evil acts of the wicked.

Don’t plan any harm against your neighbor,for he trusts you and lives near you.

An evil man seeks only rebellion;a cruel messenger will be sent against him.

One who isolates himself pursues selfish desires;he rebels against all sound judgment.

for their Redeemer is strong,and He will take up their case against you.

Those who reject the law praise the wicked,but those who keep the law battle against them.

Because the sentence against a criminal act is not carried out quickly, the heart of people is filled with the desire to commit crime.

There was a small city with few men in it. A great king came against it, surrounded it, and built large siege works against it.

If the ruler’s anger rises against you, don’t leave your place,for calmness puts great offenses to rest.

All of them are skilled with swordsand trained in warfare.Each has his sword at his sideto guard against the terror of the night.

Listen, heavens, and pay attention, earth,for the Lord has spoken:“I have raised children and brought them up,but they have rebelled against Me.

Therefore the Lord God of Hosts,the Mighty One of Israel, declares:“Ah, I will gain satisfaction from My foes;I will take revenge against My enemies.

I will turn My hand against youand will burn away your dross completely;I will remove all your impurities.

He will settle disputes among the nationsand provide arbitration for many peoples.They will turn their swords into plowsand their spears into pruning knives.Nations will not take up the sword against other nations,and they will never again train for war.

For a day belonging to the Lord of Hosts is comingagainst all that is proud and lofty,against all that is lifted up—it will be humbled—

against all the cedars of Lebanon,lofty and lifted up,against all the oaks of Bashan,

against all the high mountains,against all the lofty hills,

against every high tower,against every fortified wall,

against every ship of Tarshish,and against every splendid sea vessel.

The people will oppress one another,man against man, neighbor against neighbor;the youth will act arrogantly toward the elder,and the worthless toward the honorable.

For Jerusalem has stumbledand Judah has fallenbecause they have spoken and acted against the Lord,defying His glorious presence.

The look on their faces testifies against them,and like Sodom, they flaunt their sin.They do not conceal it.Woe to them,for they have brought evil on themselves.

The Lord brings this chargeagainst the elders and leaders of His people:“You have devastated the vineyard.The plunder from the poor is in your houses.

Therefore the Lord’s anger burns against His people.He raised His hand against them and struck them;the mountains quaked,and their corpses were like garbage in the streets.In all this, His anger is not removed,and His hand is still raised to strike.

This took place during the reign of Ahaz, son of Jotham, son of Uzziah king of Judah: Rezin king of Aram, along with Pekah, son of Remaliah, king of Israel, waged war against Jerusalem, but he could not succeed.

For Aram, along with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has plotted harm against you. They say,

‘Let us go up against Judah, terrorize it, and conquer it for ourselves. Then we can install Tabeel’s son as king in it.’”

the Lord will certainly bring against themthe mighty rushing waters of the Euphrates River—the king of Assyria and all his glory.It will overflow its channelsand spill over all its banks.

The Lord sent a message against Jacob;it came against Israel.

The Lord has raised up Rezin’s adversaries against himand stirred up his enemies.

Manasseh is with Ephraim,and Ephraim with Manasseh;together, both are against Judah.In all this, His anger is not removed,and His hand is still raised to strike. >

I will send him against a godless nation;I will command him to goagainst a people destined for My rage,to take spoils, to plunder,and to trample them down like clay in the streets.

But when the Lord finishes all His work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, He will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria for his arrogant acts and the proud look in his eyes.”

And the Lord of Hosts will brandish a whip against him as He did when He struck Midian at the rock of Oreb; and He will raise His staff over the sea as He did in Egypt.

Look! I am stirring up the Medes against them,who cannot be bought off with silverand who have no desire for gold.

Even the cypresses and the cedars of Lebanonrejoice over you:“Since you have been laid low,no woodcutter has come against us.”

“I will rise up against them”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts—“and I will cut off from Babylon her reputation, remnant, offspring, and posterity”—this is the Lord’s declaration.
