'Anger' in the Bible
“O you who tear yourself in your anger—For your sake is the earth to be abandoned,Or the rock to be moved from its place?
“He has also kindled His anger against meAnd considered me as His enemy.
“When he fills his belly,God will send His fierce anger on himAnd will rain it on him while he is eating.
“The increase of his house will depart;His possessions will flow away in the day of His anger.
“How often is the lamp of the wicked put out,Or does their calamity fall on them?Does God apportion destruction in His anger?
But the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram burned; against Job his anger burned because he justified himself before God.
And his anger burned against his three friends because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.
And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men his anger burned.
“And now, because He has not visited in His anger,Nor has He acknowledged transgression well,
“But the godless in heart lay up anger;They do not cry for help when He binds them.
“Pour out the overflowings of your anger,And look on everyone who is proud, and make him low.
Then He will speak to them in His angerAnd terrify them in His fury, saying,
For the choir director; with stringed instruments, upon an eight-string lyre. A Psalm of David.O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your anger,Nor chasten me in Your wrath.
Arise, O Lord, in Your anger;Lift up Yourself against the rage of my adversaries,And arouse Yourself for me; You have appointed judgment.
You will make them as a fiery oven in the time of your anger;The Lord will swallow them up in His wrath,And fire will devour them.
Do not hide Your face from me,Do not turn Your servant away in anger;You have been my help;Do not abandon me nor forsake me,O God of my salvation!
For His anger is but for a moment,His favor is for a lifetime;Weeping may last for the night,But a shout of joy comes in the morning.
Cease from anger and forsake wrath;Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.
A Psalm of David, for a memorial.O Lord, rebuke me not in Your wrath,And chasten me not in Your burning anger.
Because of the voice of the enemy,Because of the pressure of the wicked;For they bring down trouble upon meAnd in anger they bear a grudge against me.
Because of wickedness, cast them forth,In anger put down the peoples, O God!
Pour out Your indignation on them,And may Your burning anger overtake them.
A Maskil of Asaph.O God, why have You rejected us forever?Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture?
Has God forgotten to be gracious,Or has He in anger withdrawn His compassion? Selah.
Therefore the Lord heard and was full of wrath;And a fire was kindled against JacobAnd anger also mounted against Israel,
The anger of God rose against themAnd killed some of their stoutest ones,And subdued the choice men of Israel.
But He, being compassionate, forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them;And often He restrained His angerAnd did not arouse all His wrath.
He sent upon them His burning anger,Fury and indignation and trouble,A band of destroying angels.
He leveled a path for His anger;He did not spare their soul from death,But gave over their life to the plague,
You withdrew all Your fury;You turned away from Your burning anger.
Will You be angry with us forever?Will You prolong Your anger to all generations?
But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.
Your burning anger has passed over me;Your terrors have destroyed me.
For we have been consumed by Your angerAnd by Your wrath we have been dismayed.
Who understands the power of Your angerAnd Your fury, according to the fear that is due You?
“Therefore I swore in My anger,Truly they shall not enter into My rest.”
The Lord is compassionate and gracious,Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.
He will not always strive with us,Nor will He keep His anger forever.
Thus they provoked Him to anger with their deeds,And the plague broke out among them.
Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against His peopleAnd He abhorred His inheritance.
Then they would have swallowed us alive,When their anger was kindled against us;
The Lord is gracious and merciful;Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness.
He who is slow to anger has great understanding,But he who is quick-tempered exalts folly.
The king’s favor is toward a servant who acts wisely,But his anger is toward him who acts shamefully.
A gentle answer turns away wrath,But a harsh word stirs up anger.
A hot-tempered man stirs up strife,But the slow to anger calms a dispute.
He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty,And he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city.
A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger,And it is his glory to overlook a transgression.
A man of great anger will bear the penalty,For if you rescue him, you will only have to do it again.
The terror of a king is like the growling of a lion;He who provokes him to anger forfeits his own life.
A gift in secret subdues anger,And a bribe in the bosom, strong wrath.
Do not associate with a man given to anger;Or go with a hot-tempered man,
Or the Lord will see it and be displeased,And turn His anger away from him.
Wrath is fierce and anger is a flood,But who can stand before jealousy?
Scorners set a city aflame,But wise men turn away anger.
For the churning of milk produces butter,And pressing the nose brings forth blood;So the churning of anger produces strife.
Throughout his life he also eats in darkness with great vexation, sickness and anger.
Do not be eager in your heart to be angry,For anger resides in the bosom of fools.
On this account the anger of the Lord has burned against His people,And He has stretched out His hand against them and struck them down.And the mountains quaked, and their corpses lay like refuse in the middle of the streets.For all this His anger is not spent,But His hand is still stretched out.
and say to him, ‘Take care and be calm, have no fear and do not be fainthearted because of these two stubs of smoldering firebrands, on account of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the son of Remaliah.
The Arameans on the east and the Philistines on the west;And they devour Israel with gaping jaws.In spite of all this, His anger does not turn awayAnd His hand is still stretched out.
Therefore the Lord does not take pleasure in their young men,Nor does He have pity on their orphans or their widows;For every one of them is godless and an evildoer,And every mouth is speaking foolishness.In spite of all this, His anger does not turn awayAnd His hand is still stretched out.
Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,And together they are against Judah.In spite of all this, His anger does not turn awayAnd His hand is still stretched out.
Nothing remains but to crouch among the captivesOr fall among the slain.In spite of all this, His anger does not turn awayAnd His hand is still stretched out.
Woe to Assyria, the rod of My angerAnd the staff in whose hands is My indignation,
For in a very little while My indignation against you will be spent and My anger will be directed to their destruction.”
Then you will say on that day,“I will give thanks to You, O Lord;For although You were angry with me,Your anger is turned away,And You comfort me.
I have commanded My consecrated ones,I have even called My mighty warriors,My proudly exulting ones,To execute My anger.
Behold, the day of the Lord is coming,Cruel, with fury and burning anger,To make the land a desolation;And He will exterminate its sinners from it.
Therefore I will make the heavens tremble,And the earth will be shaken from its placeAt the fury of the Lord of hostsIn the day of His burning anger.
Which used to strike the peoples in fury with unceasing strokes,Which subdued the nations in anger with unrestrained persecution.
Behold, the name of the Lord comes from a remote place;Burning is His anger and dense is His smoke;His lips are filled with indignationAnd His tongue is like a consuming fire;
And the Lord will cause His voice of authority to be heard,And the descending of His arm to be seen in fierce anger,And in the flame of a consuming fireIn cloudburst, downpour and hailstones.
So He poured out on him the heat of His angerAnd the fierceness of battle;And it set him aflame all around,Yet he did not recognize it;And it burned him, but he paid no attention.
Rouse yourself! Rouse yourself! Arise, O Jerusalem,You who have drunk from the Lord’s hand the cup of His anger;The chalice of reeling you have drained to the dregs.
Thus says your Lord, the Lord, even your GodWho contends for His people,“Behold, I have taken out of your hand the cup of reeling,The chalice of My anger;You will never drink it again.
“In an outburst of angerI hid My face from you for a moment,But with everlasting lovingkindness I will have compassion on you,”Says the Lord your Redeemer.
“I have trodden the wine trough alone,And from the peoples there was no man with Me.I also trod them in My angerAnd trampled them in My wrath;And their lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,And I stained all My raiment.
“I trod down the peoples in My angerAnd made them drunk in My wrath,And I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”
For behold, the Lord will come in fireAnd His chariots like the whirlwind,To render His anger with fury,And His rebuke with flames of fire.
Yet you said, ‘I am innocent;Surely His anger is turned away from me.’Behold, I will enter into judgment with youBecause you say, ‘I have not sinned.’
Go and proclaim these words toward the north and say,‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord;‘I will not look upon you in anger.For I am gracious,’ declares the Lord;‘I will not be angry forever.
“For this, put on sackcloth,Lament and wail;For the fierce anger of the LordHas not turned back from us.”
I looked, and behold, the fruitful land was a wilderness,And all its cities were pulled downBefore the Lord, before His fierce anger.
Therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, My anger and My wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and on beast and on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground; and it will burn and not be quenched.”
Correct me, O Lord, but with justice;Not with Your anger, or You will bring me to nothing.
“They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns,They have strained themselves to no profit.But be ashamed of your harvestBecause of the fierce anger of the Lord.”
“Then I will cause your enemies to bring itInto a land you do not know;For a fire has been kindled in My anger,It will burn upon you.”
And you will, even of yourself, let go of your inheritanceThat I gave you;And I will make you serve your enemiesIn the land which you do not know;For you have kindled a fire in My angerWhich will burn forever.
Yet You, O Lord, knowAll their deadly designs against me;Do not forgive their iniquityOr blot out their sin from Your sight.But may they be overthrown before You;Deal with them in the time of Your anger!
I Myself will war against you with an outstretched hand and a mighty arm, even in anger and wrath and great indignation.
“The anger of the Lord will not turn backUntil He has performed and carried out the purposes of His heart;In the last days you will clearly understand it.
and do not go after other gods to serve them and to worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands, and I will do you no harm.’
Yet you have not listened to Me,” declares the Lord, “in order that you might provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm.
“And the peaceful folds are made silentBecause of the fierce anger of the Lord.
“He has left His hiding place like the lion;For their land has become a horrorBecause of the fierceness of the oppressing swordAnd because of His fierce anger.”
The fierce anger of the Lord will not turn backUntil He has performed and until He has accomplishedThe intent of His heart;In the latter days you will understand this.
The Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will enter and set this city on fire and burn it, with the houses where people have offered incense to Baal on their roofs and poured out drink offerings to other gods to provoke Me to anger.
Indeed the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have been doing only evil in My sight from their youth; for the sons of Israel have been only provoking Me to anger by the work of their hands,” declares the Lord.
“Indeed this city has been to Me a provocation of My anger and My wrath from the day that they built it, even to this day, so that it should be removed from before My face,
