'Called' in the Bible

Of the sons of the priests: the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, the sons of Barzillai, who took a wife from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and he was called by their name.

Then they said, “We will give it back and will require nothing from them; we will do exactly as you say.” So I called the priests and took an oath from them that they would do according to this promise.

So the king’s scribes were called at that time in the third month (that is, the month Sivan), on the twenty-third day; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded to the Jews, the satraps, the governors and the princes of the provinces which extended from India to Ethiopia, 127 provinces, to every province according to its script, and to every people according to their language as well as to the Jews according to their script and their language.

Therefore they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. And because of the instructions in this letter, both what they had seen in this regard and what had happened to them,

“If I called and He answered me,I could not believe that He was listening to my voice.

“I am a joke to my friends,The one who called on God and He answered him;The just and blameless man is a joke.

“For when the ear heard, it called me blessed,And when the eye saw, it gave witness of me,

I have called upon You, for You will answer me, O God;Incline Your ear to me, hear my speech.

In my distress I called upon the Lord,And cried to my God for help;He heard my voice out of His temple,And my cry for help before Him came into His ears.

To You, O Lord, I called,And to the Lord I made supplication:

Their inner thought is that their houses are foreverAnd their dwelling places to all generations;They have called their lands after their own names.

Have the workers of wickedness no knowledge,Who eat up My people as though they ate breadAnd have not called upon God?

“You called in trouble and I rescued you;I answered you in the hiding place of thunder;I proved you at the waters of Meribah. Selah.

My eye has wasted away because of affliction;I have called upon You every day, O Lord;I have spread out my hands to You.

Moses and Aaron were among His priests,And Samuel was among those who called on His name;They called upon the Lord and He answered them.

And He called for a famine upon the land;He broke the whole staff of bread.

Then I called upon the name of the Lord:“O Lord, I beseech You, save my life!”

The wise in heart will be called understanding,And sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness.

“Listen to Me, O Jacob, even Israel whom I called;I am He, I am the first, I am also the last.

“I, even I, have spoken; indeed I have called him,I have brought him, and He will make his ways successful.

Listen to Me, O islands,And pay attention, you peoples from afar.The Lord called Me from the womb;From the body of My mother He named Me.

“Why was there no man when I came?When I called, why was there none to answer?Is My hand so short that it cannot ransom?Or have I no power to deliver?Behold, I dry up the sea with My rebuke,I make the rivers a wilderness;Their fish stink for lack of waterAnd die of thirst.

“Look to Abraham your fatherAnd to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain;When he was but one I called him,Then I blessed him and multiplied him.”

“For the Lord has called you,Like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit,Even like a wife of one’s youth when she is rejected,”Says your God.

Even those I will bring to My holy mountainAnd make them joyful in My house of prayer.Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on My altar;For My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.”

“Those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins;You will raise up the age-old foundations;And you will be called the repairer of the breach,The restorer of the streets in which to dwell.

But you will be called the priests of the Lord;You will be spoken of as ministers of our God.You will eat the wealth of nations,And in their riches you will boast.

The nations will see your righteousness,And all kings your glory;And you will be called by a new nameWhich the mouth of the Lord will designate.

It will no longer be said to you, “Forsaken,”Nor to your land will it any longer be said, “Desolate”;But you will be called, “My delight is in her,”And your land, “Married”;For the Lord delights in you,And to Him your land will be married.

We have become like those over whom You have never ruled,Like those who were not called by Your name.

I will destine you for the sword,And all of you will bow down to the slaughter.Because I called, but you did not answer;I spoke, but you did not hear.And you did evil in My sightAnd chose that in which I did not delight.”

“You will leave your name for a curse to My chosen ones,And the Lord God will slay you.But My servants will be called by another name.

So I will choose their punishmentsAnd will bring on them what they dread.Because I called, but no one answered;I spoke, but they did not listen.And they did evil in My sightAnd chose that in which I did not delight.”

“Have you not just now called to Me,‘My Father, You are the friend of my youth?

then come and stand before Me in this house, which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—that you may do all these abominations?

Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your sight? Behold, I, even I, have seen it,” declares the Lord.

And now, because you have done all these things,” declares the Lord, “and I spoke to you, rising up early and speaking, but you did not hear, and I called you but you did not answer,

therefore, I will do to the house which is called by My name, in which you trust, and to the place which I gave you and your fathers, as I did to Shiloh.

For the sons of Judah have done that which is evil in My sight,” declares the Lord, “they have set their detestable things in the house which is called by My name, to defile it.

“Therefore, behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when it will no longer be called Topheth, or the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of the Slaughter; for they will bury in Topheth because there is no other place.

The Lord called your name,“A green olive tree, beautiful in fruit and form”;With the noise of a great tumultHe has kindled fire on it,And its branches are worthless.

“Why are You like a man dismayed,Like a mighty man who cannot save?Yet You are in our midst, O Lord,And we are called by Your name;Do not forsake us!”

therefore, behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the valley of Ben-hinnom, but rather the valley of Slaughter.

On the next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “Pashhur is not the name the Lord has called you, but rather Magor-missabib.

For behold, I am beginning to work calamity in this city which is called by My name, and shall you be completely free from punishment? You will not be free from punishment; for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth,” declares the Lord of hosts.’

I signed and sealed the deed, and called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales.

Although recently you had turned and done what is right in My sight, each man proclaiming release to his neighbor, and you had made a covenant before Me in the house which is called by My name.

Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am bringing on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them; because I spoke to them but they did not listen, and I have called them but they did not answer.’”

Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord which He had spoken to him.

Then he called for Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him, and for all the people both small and great,

“The Lord has rejected all my strong menIn my midst;He has called an appointed time against meTo crush my young men;The Lord has trodden as in a wine pressThe virgin daughter of Judah.

“I called to my lovers, but they deceived me;My priests and my elders perished in the cityWhile they sought food to restore their strength themselves.

You drew near when I called on You;You said, “Do not fear!”

Then the glory of the God of Israel went up from the cherub on which it had been, to the threshold of the temple. And He called to the man clothed in linen at whose loins was the writing case.

The wheels were called in my hearing, the whirling wheels.

O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and take action! For Your own sake, O my God, do not delay, because Your city and Your people are called by Your name.”
