'City's' in the Bible

The two angels came to Sodom in the evening while Lot was sitting in the city's gateway. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face toward the ground.

Beor's son Bela ruled over Edom. His city's name was Dinhabah.

After Husham died, Bedad's son Hadad, who killed Midian in the field of Moab, ruled in his place. His city's name was Avith.

After Achbor's son Baal-hanan died, Hadar ruled in his place. His city's name was Pau. And his wife's name was Mehetabel, who was the daughter of Matred, and granddaughter of Me-zahab.

And whatever [anyone] redeems from the Levites then must go out [of the buyer's hand] in the Jubilee, [including] a house's selling {in his city's property}, because the houses in the cities of the Levites [are] their property in the midst of the {Israelites}.

One who comes from Jacob will rule;he will destroy the city’s survivors.

Moreover, he has raised accusations of impropriety by saying, 'I discovered your daughter was not a virgin,' but this is the evidence of my daughter's virginity!" The cloth must then be spread out before the city's elders.

So the [king’s] men pursued them on the road to the Jordan as far as the fords [east of Jericho]; as soon as the pursuers had gone out after them, the gate [of the city] was shut.

But the Israelites disobeyed the command about the city's riches. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, stole some of the riches. The Lord was furious with the Israelites.

(Now the city's fields and surrounding towns they had assigned to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his property.)

When Achan son of Zerah disobeyed the command about the city's riches, the entire Israelite community was judged, though only one man had sinned. He most certainly died for his sin!'"

He also tore down the tower of Penuel and executed the city's men.

When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger burned.

When Gaal son of Ebed came out and stood at the entrance to the city's gate, Abimelech and his men got up from their hiding places.

Abimelech and his units attacked and blocked the entrance to the city's gate. Two units then attacked all the people in the field and struck them down.

There was a fortified tower in the center of the city, so all the men and women, as well as the city's leaders, ran into it and locked the entrance. Then they went up to the roof of the tower.

But Samson lay [resting] until midnight, then at midnight he got up and took hold of the doors of the city gate and the two door-posts, and pulled them up, [security] bar and all, and he put them on his shoulders and carried them up to the top of the hill which is opposite Hebron.

They named it Dan after their ancestor, who was one of Israel's sons. But the city's name used to be Laish.

Then Boaz went up to the city gate [where business and legal matters were settled] and sat down, and then the close relative (redeemer) of whom Boaz had spoken came by. He said to him, “Come over here, friend, and sit down.” So he came and sat down.

Then Boaz took 10 men of the town’s elders and said, “Sit here.” And they sat down.

The people who did not die were struck with sores; the city's cry for help went all the way up to heaven.

So David said to all his servants who were with him in Jerusalem, "Come on! Let's escape! Otherwise no one will be delivered from Absalom! Go immediately, or else he will quickly overtake us and bring disaster on us and kill the city's residents with the sword."

Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “Even though our lord can see that the city’s location is good, the water is bad and the land unfruitful.”

Now four men who were lepers were at the entrance of the [city’s] gate; and they said to one another, “Why should we sit here until we die?

The diseased men went and called to the city’s gatekeepers and told them, “We went to the Aramean camp and no one was there—no human sounds. There was nothing but tethered horses and donkeys, and the tents were intact.”

(But the city's land and nearby towns were allotted to Caleb son of Jephunneh.)

He removed the city's residents and made them do hard labor with saws, iron picks, and axes. This was his policy with all the Ammonite cities. Then David and all the army returned to Jerusalem.

“His children are far from safety [and included in their father’s ruin],They are oppressed and crushed in the [court of justice in the city’s] gate,And there is no one to rescue them.

“When I went out to the gate of the city,When I took my seat [as a city father] in the square,

It scorns [the] city's turmoil; it does not hear [the] driver's shouts.

They who sit in the [city’s] gate talk about me and mock me,And I am the song of the drunkards.

How blessed [happy and fortunate] is the man whose quiver is filled with them;They will not be ashamedWhen they speak with their enemies [in gatherings] at the [city] gate.

Wisdom is too exalted for a [hardened, arrogant] fool;He does not open his mouth in the gate [where the city’s rulers sit in judgment].

Her husband is known in the [city’s] gates,When he sits among the elders of the land.

You saw that the breachesIn the wall of the City of David [the citadel of Zion] were many;You collected [within the city’s walls] the waters of the Lower Pool (Siloam).

Justice is pushed back,And righteous behavior stands far away;For truth has fallen in the city square,And integrity cannot enter.

For the Lord is going to destroy Babylon and make her a ruin,And He will still her great voice [that hums with city life].And the waves [of her conquerors] roar like great waters,The noise of their voices is raised up [like the marching of an army].

Elders are gone from the gate;Young men from their music.

and will destroy the city walls of Tyre. After they break down her fortified towers, I'll scrape away the city's debris, right down to the bare bedrock,

He will cover you with the dust kicked up by his many horses. Your walls will shake from the noise of the horsemen, wheels, and chariots when he enters your gates like those who invade through a city's broken walls.

And the prince will have the area on each side of the holy donation of land and the city’s property, adjacent to the holy donation and the city’s property, stretching to the west on the west side and to the east on the east side. Its length will correspond to one of the tribal portions from the western boundary to the eastern boundary.

“The remaining [strip of] 5,000 cubits in width and 25,000 in length shall be for the city’s common (secular) use, for a place in which to live and for open country. The city shall be in the midst of it.

These are the city’s measurements:1½ miles on the north side;1½ miles on the south side;1½ miles on the east side;and 1½ miles on the west side.

The city’s open space will extend:425 feet to the north,425 feet to the south,425 feet to the east,and 425 feet to the west.

The city’s workers from all the tribes of Israel will cultivate it.

“And you shall go out through the breaches [made in the city wall],Every woman straight before her [unable to turn aside],And you shall be cast to Harmon,”Says the Lord.

Hate evil and love good,And establish justice in the [court of the city] gate.Perhaps the Lord God of hostsWill be gracious to the remnant of Joseph [that is, those who remain after God’s judgment].

The city's rich men think nothing of resorting to violence; her inhabitants lie, their tongues speak deceptive words.

The statutes of Omriand all the practices of Ahab’s househave been observed;you have followed their policies.Therefore, I will make you a desolate placeand the city’s residents an object of contempt;you will bear the scorn of My people.”

He remembers and summons his nobles;They stumble in their march [terrified because of the attack].They hurry to the city wall,And the mantelet is prepared and firmly set up.

On that day," says the Lord, "a loud cry will go up from the Fish Gate, wailing from the city's newer district, and a loud crash from the hills.

The city parks will be filled with boys and girls. They will play in the city's open parks.'
