'Comes' in the Bible
I hated all my work that I labored at under the sun because I must leave it to the man who comes after me.
There is nothing better for people than to eat and drink, and to find enjoyment in their work. I also perceived that this ability to find enjoyment comes from God.
I have seen that every [effort in] labor and every skill in work comes from man’s rivalry with his neighbor. This too is vanity (futility, false pride) and chasing after the wind.
for the poor youth has [used his wisdom and] come out of prison to become king, even though he was born poor in his kingdom.
For the dream comes through much effort and the voice of a fool through many words.
Because much talk comes from dreams and things of no purpose. But let the fear of God be in you.
This too is a sickening tragedy: exactly as he comes, so he will go. What does the one gain who struggles for the wind?
For he comes in futility and he goes in darkness, and his name is shrouded in darkness.
Say not, Why were the days which have gone by better than these? Such a question comes not from wisdom.
It is good that you grasp one thing and also not let go of the other; for the one who fears God comes forth with both of them.
Because punishment for an evil work comes not quickly, the minds of the sons of men are fully given to doing evil.
The same fate [comes] to everyone: to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good and to the wicked, to the clean and to the unclean, to those who sacrifice and to those who do not sacrifice. As [with] the good [man], so also to the sinner; [as with] those who swear an oath, so [also] those who fear oaths.
This evil is in all that is done under the sun, that one fate comes to all. Also, the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and afterwards they go to the dead.
Whatever comes to your hand to do with all your power, do it because there is no work, or thought, or knowledge, or wisdom in the place of the dead to which you are going.
Even man has no knowledge of his time; like fishes taken in an evil net, or like birds taken by deceit, are the sons of men taken in an evil time when it comes suddenly on them.
Here's another tragedy that I've observed on earth, a kind of error that comes from an overseer:
When no work is done the roof goes in, and when the hands do nothing water comes into the house.
If the clouds are full, they pour out rain upon the earth; and whether a tree falls toward the south or toward the north, wherever the tree falls, there it lies.
Just as you do not know the way and path of the wind or how the bones are formed in the womb of a pregnant woman, even so you do not know the activity of God who makes all things.
Indeed, if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in them all,and let him remember the days of darkness, since they will be many. All that comes is futile.
when that day comes, the palace guards will tremble, strong men will stoop down, women grinders will cease because they are few, and the sight of those who peer through the lattice will grow dim.
Listen! My love is approaching.Look! Here he comes, leaping over the mountains, bounding over the hills.
Till the evening comes, and the sky slowly becomes dark, come, my loved one, and be like a roe on the mountains of Bether.
(The Shulammite Bride)“What is this coming up from the wildernessLike [stately] pillars of smokePerfumed with myrrh and frankincense,With all the fragrant powders of the merchant?”
Till the evening comes, and the sky slowly becomes dark, I will go to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.
(The Chorus)“Who is this coming up from the wildernessLeaning upon her beloved?”
Set me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, passion as intense as Sheol. The flames of love are flames of fire, a blaze that comes from the LORD.
Your rulers are rebels, friends of thieves. They all love graftand chase after bribes. They do not defend the rights of the fatherless, and the widow’s case never comes before them.
For thou hast cast off thy people, the house of Jacob, because they are filled with what comes from the east, and use auguries like the Philistines, and ally themselves with the children of foreigners.
And men will go into cracks of the rocks, and into holes of the earth, for fear of the Lord, and before the glory of his power, when he comes out of his place, shaking the earth with his strength.
To take cover in the cracks of the rocks, and in the holes of the hills, for fear of the Lord, and before the glory of his power, when he comes out of his place, shaking the earth with his strength.
The Lord comes to pronounce judgment on the leaders of his people and their officials. He says, "It is you who have ruined the vineyard! You have stashed in your houses what you have stolen from the poor.
At that time the sovereign master will wash the excrement from Zion's women, he will rinse the bloodstains from Jerusalem's midst, as he comes to judge and to bring devastation.
And he will raise a signal for a nation from afar, and he will whistle for it from the end of the earth. And look! It comes quickly, swiftly!
or they'll look toward the earth, but they'll see only distress and darkness, the gloom that comes from anguish, and then they'll be thrown into total darkness."
What will you do on the day of punishmentwhen devastation comes from far away?Who will you run to for help?Where will you leave your wealth?
"For the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and against Jerusalem; he will punish the speech that comes from that willful heart of Assyria's king and the haughty look in his eyes.
For this cause the Lord, the Lord of armies, says, O my people living in Zion, have no fear of the Assyrian, even if his rod comes on your back, and his stick is lifted up as in Egypt.
The Assyrian has come against Aiath [in Judah],He has passed through Migron [with his army];At Michmash he stored his equipment.
Wail, for the Lord's day of judgment is near; it comes with all the destructive power of the sovereign judge.
Behold, the day of Yahweh comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger; to make the land a desolation, and to destroy its sinners out of it.
For the stars of the heavens and their constellations will not flash forth their light; the sun will keep back when it comes out, and [the] moon will not cause its light to shine.
Even the cypresses rejoice over you, as do the cedars of Lebanon, saying, "Now that you've been laid low, no woodcutter comes up against us.'
Don’t rejoice, all of you in Philistia, because the rod of the one who struck you is broken. For a viper will come from the root of a snake, and from its egg comes a flying serpent.
Wail, you gate! Cry out, you city! Melt away, all you Philistines! For smoke comes from the north, and there's no one to take measure in its festivals.
Let the fugitives from Moab settle among you; be a shelter to them from the destroyer. When the oppressor comes to an end, and destruction has ceased, and the marauder has vanished from the land,
When Moab appears on the high place, when he tires himself outand comes to his sanctuary to pray,it will do him no good.
The [mournful, inspired] oracle (a burden to be carried) concerning Egypt:Listen carefully, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud and is about to come to Egypt; The idols of Egypt will tremble at His presence,And the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.
And the land of Judah will become a cause of great fear to Egypt; whenever its name comes to mind, Egypt will be in fear before the Lord of armies because of his purpose against it.
So the inhabitants of this coastland [the Israelites and their neighbors] will say in that day, ‘Look what has happened to those in whom we hoped and trusted and to whom we fled for help to be spared from the king of Assyria! But we, how will we escape [captivity and exile]?’”
An oracle against the desert by the sea:Like storms that pass over the Negev,it comes from the desert, from the land of terror.
A vision of fear comes before my eyes; the worker of deceit goes on in his false way, and the waster goes on making waste. Up! Elam; to the attack! Media; I have put an end to her sorrow.
For this cause I am full of bitter grief; pains like the pains of a woman in childbirth have come on me: I am bent down with sorrow at what comes to my ears; I am shocked by what I see.
“Now behold, here comes a troop of riders, horsemen in pairs.”And one said, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon; And all the images of her gods are shattered on the ground.”
The word about Edom. A voice comes to me from Seir, Watchman, how far gone is the night? how far gone is the night?
The watchman says,“Morning comes but also night. If you would inquire, inquire;Come back again.”
But in place of these there was joy and delight, oxen and sheep were being made ready for food, there was feasting and drinking: men said, Now is the time for food and wine, for tomorrow death comes.
When the report reaches Egypt,They will be in agony at the report about Tyre.
The Lord who commands armies planned it -- to dishonor the pride that comes from all her beauty, to humiliate all the dignitaries of the earth.
The happy sound of the tambourines stops, the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt, the happy sound of the harp ceases.
From the farthest part of the earth comes the sound of songs, glory to the upright. But I said, I am wasting away, wasting away, the curse is on me! The false ones go on in their false way, yes, they go on acting falsely.
Then it will be that he who flees at the sound of terror will fall into the pit,And he who comes up out of the pit will be caught in the snare; For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble.
For, behold, Yahweh comes forth out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. The earth also will disclose her blood, and will no longer cover her slain.
When that time comes, sing about a delightful vineyard!
I, the Lord, am watching it; I will give it water at all times: I will keep it night and day, for fear that any damage comes to it.
By this, then, Jacob's guilt will be atoned for, and this will be the full harvest that comes from the removal of his sin: when he makes all the altar stones like pulverized chalkstones, no Asherah poles or incense altars will be left standing.
This also comes from the Lord of Hosts. He gives wonderful advice; He gives great wisdom.
therefore, for you this sin will become like a breach in a high wall that is about to collapse, bulging out, and whose crash comes suddenly in an instant.
O people, living in Zion, at Jerusalem, your weeping will be ended; he will certainly have mercy on you at the sound of your cry; when it comes to his ear, he will give you an answer.
He will also provide rain for your seed that you sow in the ground, and the food that comes from the ground will be rich and abundant. At that time, your cattle will graze in broad meadows,
Look, Yahweh comes from far away,His anger burning and heavy with smoke. His lips are full of fury, and His tongue is like a consuming fire.
His breath is like an overflowing torrentthat rises to the neck.He comes to sift the nations in a sieve of destructionand to put a bridle on the jaws of the peoplesto lead them astray.
Till the spirit comes on us from on high, and the waste land becomes a fertile field, and the fertile field is changed into a wood.
But it will hail when the forest comes down, and the wood will be leveled completely.
Lord, be merciful to us! We wait for you. Give us strength each morning! Deliver us when distress comes.
You nations, come here and listen;you peoples, pay attention!Let the earth hear, and all that fills it,the world and all that comes from it.
Tell those who panic, "Be strong! Do not fear! Look, your God comes to avenge! With divine retribution he comes to deliver you."
And this will be the sign to you: you will get your food this year from what comes up of itself, and in the second year from the produce of the same; and in the third year you will put in your seed, and get in the grain, and make vine-gardens, and take of their fruit.
See, the Lord God comes with strength, and His power establishes His rule. His reward is with Him,and His gifts accompany Him.
“I have stirred up and put into action one from the north [the king of Persia, Cyrus the Great], and he has come; From the rising of the sun he will call on My Name [in prayer].And he will trample on [the Babylonian] officials as on mortar,Even as a potter treads clay.”
This is what God, Yahweh, says—who created the heavens and stretched them out,who spread out the earth and what comes from it,who gives breath to the people on itand life to those who walk on it—
For this cause I will make my name clear to my people; in that day they will be certain that it is my word which comes to them; see, here am I.
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who comes with good news, who gives word of peace, saying that salvation is near; who says to Zion, Your God is ruling!
The voice of your watchmen! their voices are loud in song together; for they will see him, eye to eye, when the Lord comes back to Zion.
No instrument of war which is formed against you will be of any use; and every tongue which says evil against you will be judged false. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness comes from me, says the Lord.
For as the rain comes down and the snow from the sky, and doesn't return there, but waters the earth, and makes it bring forth and bud, and gives seed to the sower and bread to the eater;
so My word that comes from My mouthwill not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I pleaseand will prosper in what I send it to do.”
They give birth to snake's eggs, and make spider's threads: whoever takes their eggs for food comes to his death, and the egg which is crushed becomes a poison-snake.
Yes, faith is gone; and he whose heart is turned from evil comes into the power of the cruel: and the Lord saw it, and he was angry that there was no one to take up their cause.
In the west, people respect the Lord's reputation; in the east they recognize his splendor. For he comes like a rushing stream driven on by wind sent from the Lord.
"A protector comes to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their rebellious deeds," says the Lord.
The least of you will multiply into a thousand; the smallest of you will become a large nation. When the right time comes, I the Lord will quickly do this!"
Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth,Say to the daughter of Zion, “Lo, your salvation comes;Behold His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.”
Who is this who comes from Edom,With garments of glowing colors from Bozrah,This One who is majestic in His apparel,Marching in the greatness of His strength?“It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”
The sound of battle comes from the city; the sound comes from the temple! It is the sound of the Lord paying back his enemies.
For look, the Lord comes with fire, his chariots come like a windstorm, to reveal his raging anger, his battle cry, and his flaming arrows.
"For I [know] their works and their thoughts: [the time] comes, that I will gather all nations and languages; and they shall come, and shall see my glory.
The LORD told me, "You have observed well, because I'm watching over my message, to make sure it comes about."
Surely, falsehood comes from the hills, commotion from the mountains, but the salvation of Israelis only in the Lord our God.
“At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, ‘A searing wind blows from the barren heights in the wilderness on the way to My dear people. It comes not to winnow or to sift;
