'Done' in the Bible

Some time later, when King Ahasuerus’s rage had cooled down, he remembered Vashti, what she had done, and what was decided against her.

The entire royal staff at the King’s Gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, because the king had commanded this to be done for him. But Mordecai would not bow down or pay homage.

While drinking the wine, the king asked Esther, “Whatever you ask will be given to you. Whatever you want, even to half the kingdom, will be done.”

The king inquired, “What honor and special recognition have been given to Mordecai for this act?”The king’s personal attendants replied, “Nothing has been done for him.”

Haman entered, and the king asked him, “What should be done for the man the king wants to honor?”Haman thought to himself, “Who is it the king would want to honor more than me?”

Put the garment and the horse under the charge of one of the king’s most noble officials. Have them clothe the man the king wants to honor, parade him on the horse through the city square, and proclaim before him, ‘This is what is done for the man the king wants to honor.’”

So Haman took the garment and the horse. He clothed Mordecai and paraded him through the city square, crying out before him, “This is what is done for the man the king wants to honor.”

Once again, on the second day while drinking wine, the king asked Esther, “Queen Esther, whatever you ask will be given to you. Whatever you seek, even to half the kingdom, will be done.”

The king said to Queen Esther, “In the fortress of Susa the Jews have killed and destroyed 500 men, including Haman’s 10 sons. What have they done in the rest of the royal provinces? Whatever you ask will be given to you. Whatever you seek will also be done.”

The king gave the orders for this to be done, so a law was announced in Susa, and they hung the bodies of Haman’s 10 sons.

If I have sinned, what have I done to You,Watcher of mankind?Why have You made me Your target,so that I have become a burden to You?

Which of all these does not knowthat the hand of the Lord has done this?

Who would denounce his behavior to his face?Who would repay him for what he has done?

Teach me what I cannot see;if I have done wrong, I won’t do it again.”

God tells them what they have doneand how arrogantly they have transgressed.

Who has appointed His way for Him,and who has declared, “You have done wrong”?

Yahweh my God, if I have done this,if there is injustice on my hands,

if I have done harm to one at peace with meor have plundered my adversary without cause,

They will come and tell a people yet to be bornabout His righteousness—what He has done.

Repay them according to what they have done—according to the evil of their deeds.Repay them according to the work of their hands;give them back what they deserve.

Because they do not considerwhat the Lord has doneor the work of His hands,He will tear them down and not rebuild them.

I am speechless; I do not open my mouthbecause of what You have done.

Lord my God, You have done many things—Your wonderful works and Your plans for us;none can compare with You.If I were to report and speak of them,they are more than can be told.

You have done these things, and I kept silent;you thought I was just like you.But I will rebuke youand lay out the case before you.

Against You—You alone—I have sinnedand done this evil in Your sight.So You are right when You pass sentence;You are blameless when You judge.

I will praise You forever for what You have done.In the presence of Your faithful people,I will put my hope in Your name, for it is good.

Then everyone will fearand will tell about God’s work,for they will understand what He has done.

Come and listen, all who fear God,and I will tell what He has done for me.

Your righteousness reaches heaven, God,You who have done great things;God, who is like You?

They forgot what He had done,the wonderful works He had shown them.

For You have made me rejoice, Lord,by what You have done;I will shout for joybecause of the works of Your hands.

Remember the wonderful works He has done,His wonders, and the judgments He has pronounced,

so they may know that this is Your handand that You, Lord, have done it.

Our mouths were filled with laughter then,and our tongues with shouts of joy.Then they said among the nations,“The Lord has done great things for them.”

Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction,happy is the one who pays you backwhat you have done to us.

He has not done this for any nation;they do not know His judgments.Hallelujah!

Don’t accuse anyone without cause,when he has done you no harm.

Don’t say, “I’ll do to him what he did to me;I’ll repay the man for what he has done.”

This is the way of an adulteress:she eats and wipes her mouthand says, “I’ve done nothing wrong.”

What has been is what will be,and what has been done is what will be done;there is nothing new under the sun.

I applied my mind to seek and explore through wisdom all that is done under heaven. God has given people this miserable task to keep them occupied.

Then I turned to consider wisdom, madness, and folly, for what will the man be like who comes after the king? He will do what has already been done.

Therefore, I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

When there is a man whose work was done with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a man who has not worked for it, this too is futile and a great wrong.

Again, I observed all the acts of oppression being done under the sun. Look at the tears of those who are oppressed; they have no one to comfort them. Power is with those who oppress them; they have no one to comfort them.

But better than either of them is the one who has not yet existed, who has not seen the evil activity that is done under the sun.

All this I have seen, applying my mind to all the work that is done under the sun, at a time when one man has authority over another to his harm.

There is a futility that is done on the earth: there are righteous people who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked people who get what the actions of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is futile.

When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the activity that is done on the earth (even though one’s eyes do not close in sleep day or night),

I observed all the work of God and concluded that man is unable to discover the work that is done under the sun. Even though a man labors hard to explore it, he cannot find it; even if the wise man claims to know it, he is unable to discover it.

This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: there is one fate for everyone. In addition, the hearts of people are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live—after that they go to the dead.

Their love, their hate, and their envy have already disappeared, and there is no longer a portion for them in all that is done under the sun.

What more could I have done for My vineyardthan I did?Why, when I expected a yield of good grapes,did it yield worthless grapes?

For he said:I have done this by my own strengthand wisdom, for I am clever.I abolished the borders of nationsand plundered their treasures;like a mighty warrior, I subjugated the inhabitants.

Sing to Yahweh, for He has done glorious things.Let this be known throughout the earth.

Lord, You will establish peace for us,for You have also done all our work for us.

You who are far off, hear what I have done;you who are near, know My strength.”

Look, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries: they completely destroyed them. Will you be rescued?

He said, “Please, Lord, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and wholeheartedly, and have done what pleases You.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

What can I say?He has spoken to me,and He Himself has done it.I walk along slowly all my yearsbecause of the bitterness of my soul,

Who has performed and done this,calling the generations from the beginning?I, Yahweh, am the first,and with the last—I am He.”

so that all may see and know,consider and understand,that the hand of the Lord has done this,the Holy One of Israel has created it.

I will make known the Lord’s faithful loveand the Lord’s praiseworthy acts,because of all the Lord has done for us—even the many good thingsHe has done for the house of Israeland has done for them based on His compassionand the abundance of His faithful love.

How can you protest, “I am not defiled;I have not followed the Baals”?Look at your behavior in the valley;acknowledge what you have done.You are a swift young cameltwisting and turning on her way,

Will He bear a grudge forever?Will He be endlessly infuriated?”This is what you have said,but you have done the evil thingsyou are capable of.

In the days of King Josiah the Lord asked me, “Have you seen what unfaithful Israel has done? She has ascended every high hill and gone under every green tree to prostitute herself there.

I thought: After she has done all these things, she will return to Me. But she didn’t return, and her treacherous sister Judah saw it.

Now, because you have done all these things”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and because I have spoken to you time and time again but you wouldn’t listen, and I have called to you, but you wouldn’t answer,

“For the Judeans have done what is evil in My sight.” This is the Lord’s declaration. “They have set up their detestable things in the house that is called by My name and defiled it.

I have paid careful attention.They do not speak what is right.No one regrets his evil,asking, ‘What have I done?’Everyone has stayed his courselike a horse rushing into battle.

Yet they would not obey or pay attention; each one followed the stubbornness of his evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant, because they had not done what I commanded them to do.”

Can any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain?Or can the skies alone give showers?Are You not the Lord our God?We therefore put our hope in You,for You have done all these things.

Therefore, this is what the Lord says:Ask among the nations,Who has heard things like these?Virgin Israel has done a most terrible thing.

Why do you cry out about your injury?Your pain has no cure!I have done these things to youbecause of your enormous guiltand your innumerable sins.

This is what the Lord says:If the heavens above can be measuredand the foundations of the earth below explored,I will reject all of Israel’s descendantsbecause of all they have done—this is the Lord’s declaration.

From their youth, the Israelites and Judeans have done nothing but what is evil in My sight! They have done nothing but provoke Me to anger by the work of their hands”—this is the Lord’s declaration—

because of all the evil the Israelites and Judeans have done to provoke Me to anger—they, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem.

But we have lived in tents and have obeyed and done as our ancestor Jonadab commanded us.

Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites: “This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Because you have obeyed the command of your ancestor Jonadab and have kept all his commands and have done all that he commanded you,

“My lord the king, these men have been evil in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have dropped him into the cistern where he will die from hunger, because there is no more bread in the city.”

and the Lord has fulfilled it. He has done just what He decreed. Because you people have sinned against the Lord and have not obeyed Him, this thing has happened.

When Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies with him heard of all the evil that Ishmael son of Nethaniah had done,

Raise a war cry against her on every side!She has thrown up her hands in surrender;her defense towers have fallen;her walls are demolished.Since this is the Lord’s vengeance,take out your vengeance on her;as she has done, do the same to her.

Summon the archers to Babylon,all who string the bow;camp all around her; let none escape.Repay her according to her deeds;just as she has done, do the same to her,for she has acted arrogantly against the Lord,against the Holy One of Israel.

Zedekiah did what was evil in the Lord’s sight just as Jehoiakim had done.
