Let us lie down in our shame, and let our humiliation cover us; for we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day. And we have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

I looked, and behold, the fruitful land was a wilderness,And all its cities were pulled downBefore the Lord, before His fierce anger.

“Flee for safety, O sons of Benjamin,From the midst of Jerusalem!Now blow a trumpet in TekoaAnd raise a signal over Beth-haccerem;For evil looks down from the north,And a great destruction.

For thus says the Lord of hosts,“Cut down her treesAnd cast up a siege against Jerusalem.This is the city to be punished,In whose midst there is only oppression.

“Were they ashamed because of the abomination they have done?They were not even ashamed at all;They did not even know how to blush.Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;At the time that I punish them,They shall be cast down,” says the Lord.

“Were they ashamed because of the abomination they had done?They certainly were not ashamed,And they did not know how to blush;Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;At the time of their punishment they shall be brought down,”Says the Lord.

“For a voice of wailing is heard from Zion,‘How are we ruined!We are put to great shame,For we have left the land,Because they have cast down our dwellings.’”

“If you have run with footmen and they have tired you out,Then how can you compete with horses?If you fall down in a land of peace,How will you do in the thicket of the Jordan?

“Many shepherds have ruined My vineyard,They have trampled down My field;They have made My pleasant fieldA desolate wilderness.

This wicked people, who refuse to listen to My words, who walk in the stubbornness of their hearts and have gone after other gods to serve them and to bow down to them, let them be just like this waistband which is totally worthless.

But if you will not listen to it,My soul will sob in secret for such pride;And my eyes will bitterly weepAnd flow down with tears,Because the flock of the Lord has been taken captive.

Say to the king and the queen mother,“Take a lowly seat,For your beautiful crownHas come down from your head.”

“You will say this word to them,‘Let my eyes flow down with tears night and day,And let them not cease;For the virgin daughter of my people has been crushed with a mighty blow,With a sorely infected wound.

“Their widows will be more numerous before MeThan the sand of the seas;I will bring against them, against the mother of a young man,A destroyer at noonday;I will suddenly bring down on herAnguish and dismay.

Then you are to say to them, ‘It is because your forefathers have forsaken Me,’ declares the Lord, ‘and have followed other gods and served them and bowed down to them; but Me they have forsaken and have not kept My law.

The sin of Judah is written down with an iron stylus;With a diamond point it is engraved upon the tablet of their heartAnd on the horns of their altars,

O Lord, the hope of Israel,All who forsake You will be put to shame.Those who turn away on earth will be written down,Because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the Lord.

“Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will announce My words to you.”

Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something on the wheel.

At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy it;

Therefore, give their children over to famineAnd deliver them up to the power of the sword;And let their wives become childless and widowed.Let their men also be smitten to death,Their young men struck down by the sword in battle.

I will also strike down the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast; they will die of a great pestilence.

Then afterwards,” declares the Lord, “I will give over Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people, even those who survive in this city from the pestilence, the sword and the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their foes and into the hand of those who seek their lives; and he will strike them down with the edge of the sword. He will not spare them nor have pity nor compassion.”’

“Behold, I am against you, O valley dweller,O rocky plain,” declares the Lord,“You men who say, ‘Who will come down against us?Or who will enter into our habitations?’

Thus says the Lord, “Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and there speak this word

“For I will set apart destroyers against you,Each with his weapons;And they will cut down your choicest cedarsAnd throw them on the fire.

Then they will answer, ‘Because they forsook the covenant of the Lord their God and bowed down to other gods and served them.’”

“Thus says the Lord,‘Write this man down childless,A man who will not prosper in his days;For no man of his descendants will prosperSitting on the throne of DavidOr ruling again in Judah.’”

“Therefore their way will be like slippery paths to them,They will be driven away into the gloom and fall down in it;For I will bring calamity upon them,The year of their punishment,” declares the Lord.

“Behold, the storm of the Lord has gone forth in wrath,Even a whirling tempest;It will swirl down on the head of the wicked.

As I have watched over them to pluck up, to break down, to overthrow, to destroy and to bring disaster, so I will watch over them to build and to plant,” declares the Lord.

For thus says the Lord God of Israel concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah which are broken down to make a defense against the siege ramps and against the sword,

he went down to the king’s house, into the scribe’s chamber. And behold, all the officials were sitting there—Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.

They said to him, “Sit down, please, and read it to us.” So Baruch read it to them.

Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchijah the king’s son, which was in the court of the guardhouse; and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. Now in the cistern there was no water but only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.

So Ebed-melech took the men under his authority and went into the king’s palace to a place beneath the storeroom and took from there worn-out clothes and worn-out rags and let them down by ropes into the cistern to Jeremiah.

Then all the officials of the king of Babylon came in and sat down at the Middle Gate: Nergal-sar-ezer, Samgar-nebu, Sar-sekim the Rab-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the Rab-mag, and all the rest of the officials of the king of Babylon.

The Chaldeans also burned with fire the king’s palace and the houses of the people, and they broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him arose and struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword and put to death the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.

Ishmael also struck down all the Jews who were with him, that is with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who were found there, the men of war.

Now as for the cistern where Ishmael had cast all the corpses of the men whom he had struck down because of Gedaliah, it was the one that King Asa had made on account of Baasha, king of Israel; Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.

Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him took from Mizpah all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, that is, the men who were soldiers, the women, the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon.

because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them, since Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.

‘If you will indeed stay in this land, then I will build you up and not tear you down, and I will plant you and not uproot you; for I will relent concerning the calamity that I have inflicted on you.

This is the message which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch the son of Neriah, when he had written down these words in a book at Jeremiah’s dictation, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying:

Thus you are to say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Behold, what I have built I am about to tear down, and what I have planted I am about to uproot, that is, the whole land.”

The nations have heard of your shame,And the earth is full of your cry of distress;For one warrior has stumbled over another,And both of them have fallen down together.

“Why have your mighty ones become prostrate?They do not stand because the Lord has thrust them down.

“Make your baggage ready for exile,O daughter dwelling in Egypt,For Memphis will become a desolation;It will even be burned down and bereft of inhabitants.

“They have cut down her forest,” declares the Lord;“Surely it will no more be found,Even though they are now more numerous than locustsAnd are without number.

“Moab has been destroyed and men have gone up to his cities;His choicest young men have also gone down to the slaughter,”Declares the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts.

“Come down from your gloryAnd sit on the parched ground,O daughter dwelling in Dibon,For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you,He has ruined your strongholds.

“As for the terror of you,The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,O you who live in the clefts of the rock,Who occupy the height of the hill.Though you make your nest as high as an eagle’s,I will bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.

“Raise your battle cry against her on every side!She has given herself up, her pillars have fallen,Her walls have been torn down.For this is the vengeance of the Lord:Take vengeance on her;As she has done to others, so do to her.

Put all her young bulls to the sword;Let them go down to the slaughter!Woe be upon them, for their day has come,The time of their punishment.

“They will fall down slain in the land of the Chaldeans,And pierced through in their streets.”

“Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain,Who destroys the whole earth,” declares the Lord,“And I will stretch out My hand against you,And roll you down from the crags,And I will make you a burnt out mountain.

“Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has devoured me and crushed me,He has set me down like an empty vessel;He has swallowed me like a monster,He has filled his stomach with my delicacies;He has washed me away.

“I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter,Like rams together with male goats.

“I will punish Bel in Babylon,And I will make what he has swallowed come out of his mouth;And the nations will no longer stream to him.Even the wall of Babylon has fallen down!

and say, ‘Just so shall Babylon sink down and not rise again because of the calamity that I am going to bring upon her; and they will become exhausted.’” Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

So all the army of the Chaldeans who were with the captain of the guard broke down all the walls around Jerusalem.

Then the king of Babylon struck them down and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was led away into exile from its land.
