'Honor' in the Bible
How terrible it will be for you Pharisees! You love to have the places of honor in the synagogues and to be greeted in the marketplaces.
When Jesus noticed how the guests were choosing the places of honor, he told them a parable.
"When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don't sit down at the place of honor in case someone more important than you was invited by the host.
Then the host who invited both of you would come to you and say, "Give this person your place.' In disgrace, you would have to take the place of least honor.
But when you are invited, go and sit down at the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, "Friend, move up higher,' and you will be honored in the presence of everyone who eats with you.
You know the commandments: "Never commit adultery. Never murder. Never steal. Never give false testimony. Honor your father and mother.'"
"Beware of the scribes! They like to walk around in long robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
