"But a man dies, and he dwindles away; thus a human being passes away, and where is he?

God has made everything fit beautifully in its appropriate time, but he has also placed ignorance in the human heart so that people cannot discover what God has ordained, from the beginning to the end of their lives.

For what happens to people also happens to animals a single event happens to them: just as someone dies, so does the other. In fact, they all breathe the same way, so that a human being has no superiority over an animal. All of this is pointless.

There exists another misfortune that I have observed on earth, and it is a heavy burden upon human beings:

Whatever exists has been named already; people know what it means to be human and a person cannot defeat one who is more powerful than he.

For who [limited by human wisdom] knows what is good for man during his lifetime, during the few days of his futile life? He spends them like a shadow [staying busy, but achieving nothing of lasting value]. For who can tell a man what will happen after him [to his work, his treasure, his plans] under the sun [after his life is over]?

Whatever has happened is beyond human understanding; it is far deeper than anyone can fathom.

I have discovered only this: God made human beings for righteousness, but they seek many alternatives."
