A feast is for laughing, and wine makes glad the heart; but by the one and the other money is wasted.
One who watches the wind will not sow,and the one who looks at the clouds will not reap.
As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, How -- bones in the womb of the full one, So thou knowest not the work of God who maketh the whole.
In the morning sow your seed, and at evening do not let your hand rest, because you don’t know which will succeed, whether one or the other,or if both of them will be equally good.
the doors at the street are shutwhile the sound of the mill fades;when one rises at the sound of a bird, and all the daughters of song grow faint.
The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
But beyond this my son, [about going further than the words given by one Shepherd], be warned: the writing of many books is endless [so do not believe everything you read], and excessive study and devotion to books is wearying to the body.
Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?
To my joyous one in chariots of Pharaoh, I have compared thee, my friend,
As a bag of myrrh is my well-loved one to me, when he is at rest all night between my breasts.
See, you are fair, my loved one, and a pleasure; our bed is green.
As the apple-tree among the trees of the wood, so is my loved one among the sons. I took my rest under his shade with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
The voice of my loved one! See, he comes dancing on the mountains, stepping quickly on the hills.
My beloved is like to a roe, Or to a young one of the harts. Lo, this -- he is standing behind our wall, Looking from the windows, Blooming from the lattice.
My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
My beloved belongs to me and I belong to him. He is the one who shepherds his flock among the lilies.
Till the day doth break forth, And the shadows have fled away, Turn, be like, my beloved, To a roe, or to a young one of the harts, On the mountains of separation!
In my bed at nightI sought the one I love;I sought him, but did not find him.
I will arise now and go about the city, through the streets and the plazas.I will seek the one I love.I sought him, but did not find him.
The guards who go about the city found me.I asked them, “Have you seen the one I love?”
I had just passed themwhen I found the one I love.I held on to him and would not let him gountil I brought him to my mother’s house—to the chamber of the one who conceived me.
(The Bridegroom)“How fair and beautiful you are, my darling,How very beautiful!Your eyes behind your veil are like those of a dove;Your hair is like [the shimmering black fleece of] a flock of [Arabian] goatsThat have descended from Mount Gilead [beyond the Jordan].
Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them.
Your neck is like the tower of David built with courses of stones; one thousand shields are hung on it -- all shields of valiant warriors.
Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.
Be awake, O north wind; and come, O south, blowing on my garden, so that its spices may come out. Let my loved one come into his garden, and take of his good fruits.
(The Bridegroom)“I have come into my garden, my sister, my [promised] bride;I have gathered my myrrh along with my balsam and spice [from your sweet words].I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey;I have drunk my wine with my milk.Eat, friends;Drink and drink deeply, O lovers.”
W I sleep, but my heart is awake.A sound! My love is knocking!M Open to me, my sister, my darling,my dove, my perfect one.For my head is drenched with dew,my hair with droplets of the night.
My loved one put his hand on the door, and my heart was moved for him.
I got up to let my loved one in; and my hands were dropping with myrrh, and my fingers with liquid myrrh, on the lock of the door.
I made the door open to my loved one; but my loved one had taken himself away, and was gone, my soul was feeble when his back was turned on me; I went after him, but I did not come near him; I said his name, but he gave me no answer.
I say to you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if you see my loved one, what will you say to him? That I am overcome with love.
Y What makes the one you love better than another, most beautiful of women? What makes him better than another, that you would give us this charge?
My loved one is white and red, the chief among ten thousand.
His mouth is most sweet; yes, he is all beautiful. This is my loved one, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.
Where is your loved one gone, O most fair among women? Where is your loved one turned away, that we may go looking for him with you?
My loved one is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to take food in the gardens, and to get lilies.
I belong to my beloved, and my beloved belongs to me. He is the one who grazes his flock among the lilies.
Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.
My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
“I went down to the orchard of nut treesTo see the flowers of the valley,To see whether the grapevine had buddedAnd the pomegranates were in flower.
The Lover to His Beloved: Turn, turn, O Perfect One! Turn, turn, that I may stare at you! The Beloved to Her Lover: Why do you gaze upon the Perfect One like the dance of the Mahanaim?
How beautiful you are and how pleasant, O loved one in the delights!
And the roof of your mouth like good wine flowing down smoothly for my loved one, moving gently over my lips and my teeth.
I am for my loved one, and his desire is for me.
Come, my loved one, let us go out into the field; let us take rest among the cypress-trees.
The mandrakes give out a sweet smell, and at our doors are all sorts of good fruits, new and old, which I have kept for my loved one.
If only I could treat you like my brother, one who nursed at my mother’s breasts,I would find you in public and kiss you,and no one would scorn me.
I would lead you and bring you to my mother's house, the one who taught me. I would give you spiced wine to drink, the nectar of my pomegranates.
Y Who is this coming up from the wilderness, leaning on the one she loves?W I awakened you under the apricot tree. There your mother conceived you;there she conceived and gave you birth.
Many waters are not able to quench the love, And floods do not wash it away. If one give all the wealth of his house for love, Treading down -- they tread upon it.
I am a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favour.
Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.
The Lover to His Beloved: O you who stay in the gardens, my companions are listening attentively for your voice; let me be the one to hear it!
Or to a young one of the harts on mountains of spices!
Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
From the sole of the foot even to the headThere is nothing healthy in the nation’s body,Only bruises, welts, and raw wounds,Not pressed out or bandaged,Nor softened with oil [as a remedy].
Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.
Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:
The strong one will become tinder, and his work a spark;both will burn together, with no one to quench the flames.
And he will be the judge between the nations, and the peoples will be ruled by his decisions: and their swords will be turned into plough-blades, and their spears into vine-knives: no longer will the nations be turning their swords against one another, and the knowledge of war will be gone for ever.
For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:
In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;
The brave man and the warrior [He is also removing],The judge and the prophet,The diviner and the elder,
the captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the clever among artificers, and the one versed in enchantments.
And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.
When one layeth hold on his brother, Of the house of his father, by the garment, 'Come, a ruler thou art to us, And this ruin is under thy hand.'
He will protest on that day, saying,“I will not be a governor; For in my house there is neither bread nor clothing; You should not make me a judge and ruler of the people.”
head wraps (turbans), [short, jingling] ankle chains, sashes, perfume boxes, amulets (charms),
And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.
And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:
I will sing about the one I love,a song about my loved one’s vineyard:The one I love had a vineyardon a very fertile hill.
I will make it a wasteland; no one will prune its vines or hoe its ground, and thorns and briers will grow there. I will order the clouds not to drop any rain on it.
The Lord who commands armies told me this: "Many houses will certainly become desolate, large, impressive houses will have no one living in them.
Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of an homer shall yield an ephah.
Therefore hath Sheol enlarged herself, And hath opened her mouth without limit. And gone down hath its honour, and its multitude, And its noise, and its exulting one -- into her.
Humanity is brought low, and each one is humbled, while the eyes of the self-exalting are brought low.
but Jehovah of hosts is exalted in justice, and God the Holy One is sanctified in righteousness.
That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!
Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
And he will lift up a banner to the nations afar off, and will hiss for one from the end of the earth; and behold, it will come rapidly and lightly.
None of them grows weary or stumbles;no one slumbers or sleeps. No belt is looseand no sandal strap broken.
Their roaring is like a lion’s;they roar like young lions;they growl and seize their preyand carry it off,and no one can rescue it.
And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof.
Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
Even if only a tenth of the people remain in the land, it will again be destroyed, like one of the large sacred trees or an Asherah pole, when a sacred pillar on a high place is thrown down. That sacred pillar symbolizes the special chosen family."
“Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God [one that will convince you that God has spoken and will keep His word]; make your request as deep as Sheol or as high as heaven.”
On that day, the Lord will shave the head and the hair of the feet with a razor of the one hired from beyond [the] river--with the king of Assyria--and it will even take off the beard.
And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.
With arrows and with bow shall one come thither, because all the land shall be briers and thorns.
for before the youth doth know to cry, My father, and My mother, one taketh away the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria, before the king of Asshur.'
The LORD of the Heavenly Armies he's the one you are to regard as holy. Let him be the one whom you fear, and let him be the one before whom you stand in terror!
Then he will be a sanctuary, but for both houses of Israel he'll also be a stone with which someone strikes himself, a rock one stumbles over, a trap and a snare to those who live in Jerusalem.
Look! I and the children whom Yahweh has given to me [are] like signs and portents in Israel from Yahweh of hosts, the one who dwells on the mountain of Zion.
When one looks out over the land, he sees distress and darkness, gloom and anxiety, darkness and people forced from the land.
The people did not return to the one who struck them, they did not seek reconciliation with the Lord who commands armies.
Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.
