'Saying' in the Bible

And Jesus and his disciples went out to the villages of Caesarea Philippi, and on the way he asked his disciples, saying to them, "Who do people say [that] I am?"

And they told him, saying, "John the Baptist, and others Elijah, and others that [you are] one of the prophets."

And they asked him, saying, "{Why do} the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

Now [when] Jesus saw that a crowd was running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and enter into him no more!"

And they were very astounded, saying to one another, "And who can be saved?"

And he began to teach and was saying to them, "Is it not written, 'My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations,' but you have made it a cave of robbers!"

And they began to discuss [this] with one another, saying, "What should we say? If we say 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?'

And they replied to Jesus saying, "We do not know." And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these [things]."

He had one more, a beloved son. Last [of all] he sent him to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

And Sadducees--who say there is no resurrection--came up to him and began to ask him, saying,

Now concerning the dead, that they are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses {in the passage about the bush} how God spoke to him, saying, 'I [am] the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob'?

But he kept saying emphatically, "If it is necessary for me to die with you, I will never deny you!" And they all were saying the same [thing] also.

And again he went away [and] prayed, saying the same thing.

Now the one who was betraying him had given them a sign, saying, "[The one] whom I kiss--he is [the one]. Arrest him and lead [him] away under guard!"

And some stood up [and] began to give false testimony against him, saying,

"We heard him saying, 'I will destroy this temple made by hands, and within three days I will build another not made by hands."

And the high priest stood up in the midst [of them] [and] asked Jesus, saying, "Do you not reply anything? What are these [people] testifying against you?"

But he denied [it], saying, "I neither know nor understand what you mean!" And he went out into the gateway, and a rooster crowed.

So Pilate asked him again, saying, "Do you not answer anything? See how many [charges] they are bringing against you!"

So Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?"

And those who passed by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild [it] in three days,

In the same way also the chief priests, along with the scribes, were mocking [him] to one another, saying, "He saved others; he is not able to save himself!

And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put [it] on a reed, [and] gave [it] to him to drink, saying, "Leave [him] alone! Let us see if Elijah is coming to take him down."

And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?"

Now after these days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she kept herself in seclusion [for] five months, saying,

and he asked for a writing tablet [and] wrote, saying, "John is his name." And they were all astonished.

And all those who heard kept [these things] in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be? For indeed the hand of the Lord was with him!"

And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army, praising God and saying,

Therefore he was saying to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "Offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

And the crowds were asking him, saying, "What then should we do?"

And those who served in the army were also asking him, saying, "What should we also do?" And he said to them, "Extort from no one, and do not blackmail [anyone], and be content with your pay."

John answered them all, saying, "I baptize you with water, but the one who is more powerful than I [am] is coming, of whom I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

And they were all speaking well of him, and were astonished at the gracious words that were coming out of his mouth. And they were saying, "Is this man not the son of Joseph?"

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent and come out of him!" And [after] throwing him down in their midst, the demon came out of him without hurting him at all.

And amazement came upon [them] all, and they began to talk with one another, saying, "What word [is] this? For he commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out!"

And demons also were coming out of many, crying out and saying, "You are the Son of God!" And he rebuked [them] [and] did not permit them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

And it happened that while he was in one of the towns, {there was} a man {covered with leprosy}. And [when he] saw Jesus, he fell down on [his] face [and] begged him, saying, "Lord, if you are willing, you are able to make me clean."

And extending [his] hand he touched him, saying, "I am willing; be clean." And immediately the leprosy went away from him.

And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, "Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins except God alone?"

And amazement seized [them] all, and they began to glorify God. And they were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen wonderful things today!"

And the Pharisees and their scribes began to complain to his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?"

And [when they] came to Jesus, they began imploring him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy [that] you grant this for him,

So Jesus went with them. Now by this time he was not far away from the house, [and] the centurion sent friends, saying to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy that you should come in under my roof.

And fear seized [them] all, and they began to glorify God, saying, "A great prophet has appeared among us!" and "God has visited to help his people!"

sent [them] to the Lord, saying, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?"

And [when] the men came to him, they said, "John the Baptist sent us to you, saying, 'Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?'"

Now [when] the Pharisee who invited him saw [this], he spoke to himself, saying, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman [this is] who is touching him, that she is a sinner."

And they came [and] woke him up, saying, "Master, master! We are perishing!" So he got up [and] rebuked the wind and the billowing waves of water and they ceased, and it became calm.

And he said to them, "Where [is] your faith?" But they were afraid [and] were astonished, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water and they obey him?"

And the man from who the demons had gone out was begging him to stay with him, but he sent him away, saying,

[While] he was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue ruler's [house], saying, "Your daughter is dead! Trouble the Teacher no longer!"

But he took her hand [and] called, saying, "Child, get up."

And it happened that while he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, saying, "Who do the crowds say [that] I am?"

And it happened that as they were going away from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good [for] us to be here. And let us make three shelters, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah," not knowing what he was saying.

And [while] he was saying these [things], a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud.

And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, "Teacher, I beg you to look with concern on my son, because he is my only [son]!

And behold, a certain legal expert stood up to test him, saying, "Teacher, what must I do so that I will inherit eternal life?"

And he told a parable to them, saying, "The land of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.

And he reasoned to himself, saying, 'What should I do? For I do not have anywhere I can gather in my crops.'

when once the master of the house has gotten up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock [on] the door, saying, 'Lord, open [the door] for us!' And he will answer [and] say to you, 'I do not know where you are from!'

And he will reply, saying to you, 'I do not know where you are from! Go away from me, all [you] {evildoers}!'

And Jesus answered [and] said to the legal experts and Pharisees, saying, "Is it permitted to heal on the Sabbath, or not?"

Now he told a parable to those who had been invited [when he] noticed how they were choosing for themselves the places of honor, saying to them,

So he told them this parable, saying,

And [when he] returns to [his] home, he calls together [his] friends and neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost!'

And [when she] has found [it], she calls together [her] friends and neighbors, saying, 'Rejoice with me, because I have found the drachma that I had lost!'

And they raised [their] voices, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!"

saying, "There was a certain judge in a certain town who did not fear God and did not respect people.

And there was a widow in that town, and she kept coming to him, saying, 'Grant me justice against my adversary!'

And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unrighteous judge is saying!

But the tax collector, standing far away, did not want even to raise his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!'

But Jesus called them to himself, saying, "Allow the children to come to me, and do not forbid them, {for to such belongs} the kingdom of God.

And a certain ruler asked him, saying, "Good Teacher, [by] doing what will I inherit eternal life?"

And they understood none of these [things], and this saying was concealed from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.

And he called out, saying, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

And [when they] saw [it], they all began to complain, saying, "He has gone in to find lodging with a man who is a sinner!"

But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to be king over us!'

So the first arrived, saying, 'Sir, your mina has made ten minas more!'

And the second came, saying, 'Sir, your mina has made five minas.'

And another came, saying, 'Sir, behold your mina, which I had put away for safekeeping in a piece of cloth.

saying, 'Go into the village in front of [you], in which [as you] enter you will find a colt tied, on which {no person has ever} sat, and untie it [and] bring [it].

saying, "Blessed [is] the king, the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

saying, "If you had known on this day--even you--the things [that make] for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.

saying to them, "It is written, 'And my house will be a house of prayer,' but you have made it a cave of robbers!"

and said, saying to him, "Tell us, by what authority you are doing these [things], or who is the one who gave you this authority?

And they discussed [this] with one another, saying, "If we say 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why did you not believe him?'

But [when] the tenant farmers saw him, they began to reason with one another, saying, 'This is the heir. Let us kill him so that the inheritance will become ours!'

And they asked him, saying, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and do not {show partiality}, but teach the way of God in truth.

saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us if someone's brother dies having a wife, and this man is childless, that his brother should take the wife and {father} descendants for his brother.

And they asked him, saying, "Teacher, when therefore will these [things] happen, and what [will be] the sign when these [things] are about to take place?"
