1 The Word [already] existed in the beginning [of time]. [Note: This is a reference to the preexistence of Jesus. See verse 14]. And the Word was with God and the Word was [what] God [was].

15 [Eventually] this Word became a human being and lived among us [Note: The word "lived" here refers to pitching a temporary tent]. (And we saw His splendor; such splendor as belongs to the Father's only Son), full of God's favor and truth.
15 John *(X)testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘(Y)He who comes after me (m)has a higher rank than I, (Z)for He existed before me.’”
15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

15 John told the truth about him when he cried out, "This is the person about whom I said, "The one who comes after me ranks higher than me, because he existed before me.'"
16 John gave testimony about Jesus, shouting out, "This person is the one about whom I said, 'He who will come after me ranks above me because He existed before me.'"
16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

17 For we have all received from His full richness one favor after another.

19 This is (AI)the testimony of John, when (AJ)the Jews sent to him priests and Levites (AK)from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

21 Then he declared openly, without denying it, "I am not the Christ [i.e., God's specially chosen one]."
21 They asked him, “What then? Are you (AM)Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you (AN)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
21 “What then?” they asked him. “Are you Elijah?”(AR)“I am not,” he said.“Are you the Prophet?”(q)(AS)“No,” he answered.
21 So they asked him, "Well then, are you Elijah?" John said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."
22 So, they asked him, "Who then [are you]? Are you Elijah [i.e., returned from the dead]?" But he answered, "[No], I am not." "[Then], are you the prophet [i.e., Moses. See Deut. 18:15-19]?" they asked. And he answered, "No."
22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
22 “Who are you, then?” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself?”
22 "Who are you?" they asked him. "We must give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
23 So, they asked him [again], "[Then], who are you? We need to take back an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
23 He said, “I am (AO)a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
23 He said, “I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord(AT)(r)—just as Isaiah(AU) the prophet said.”

24 He replied, "I am the voice of a man who is calling out in the desert, [urging people to] 'Make the road for the Lord straight,' as Isaiah the prophet said, [Isa. 40:3]."

25 Now those who were sent [i.e., to question John] were Pharisees [i.e., a strict sect of the Jewish religion].
25 They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the (r)Christ, nor Elijah, nor (AP)the Prophet?”
25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

27 So, John answered them, saying, "I am immersing people in water, but there is Someone among you whom you do not recognize.
27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
27 the one who is coming after me, whose sandal straps I am not worthy to untie."
29 These things happened in Bethany on the east side of the Jordan River where John was immersing people. [Note: This was a different Bethany from the one just outside of Jerusalem].
29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, “Behold, (AU)the Lamb of God who (AV)takes away the sin of the world!
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

33 I did not recognize (w)Him, but He who sent me to baptize (x)in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, (BA)this is the One who baptizes (y)in the Holy Spirit.’
33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
33 I didn’t know Him, but He(x) who sent me to baptize with(y) water told me, ‘The One you see the Spirit descending and resting on—He is the One who baptizes with(z) the Holy Spirit.’(BF)

34 And I did not recognize Him, but He [i.e., God], who sent me to immerse in water, said to me, 'The one on whom you see the Holy Spirit descending and remaining is the same One who [will] immerse people in the Holy Spirit.'
34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

37 And when he saw Jesus walking by, he said, "Look, [there is] the Lamb of God!"

40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

41 One of the two men who had listened to John and had become a follower of Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
41 He *found first his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the (BG)Messiah” (which translated means (ab)Christ).

43 (BK)The next day He purposed to go into (BL)Galilee, and He *found (BM)Philip. And Jesus *said to him, “(BN)Follow Me.”
43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

46 Nathanael said to him, “(BW)Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” (BX)Philip *said to him, “Come and see.”
46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
46 “Can anything good(BS) come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him.“Come and see,” Philip answered.
46 Nathaniel asked him, "From Nazareth? Can anything good come from there?" Philip told him, "Come and see!"
47 Nathaniel replied to him, "Can anything worthwhile come from Nazareth?" [Note: Nazareth had a bad reputation and Jewish writings made no prediction of a prophet coming from that area. See John 7:52]. Philip answered him, "Come and see."
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Behold, an (BY)Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
47 Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said about him, “Here is a true Israelite;(BT) no deceit is in him.”

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.
48 Nathaniel asked him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
49 Nathaniel asked Jesus, "How did you know me?" Jesus answered him, "I saw you when you were under that fig tree, [even] before Philip called you."
49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
49 Nathaniel replied to him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"
50 Nathaniel replied to Him, "Rabbi [i.e., Teacher], you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”
50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
50 Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe only because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You(ag) will see greater things than this.”
50 Jesus told him, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that."
51 Jesus said to him, "Do you believe [in me just] because I told you, 'I saw you under that fig tree'? You will see [even] greater things than these [happen]."
51 And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see (CD)the heavens opened and (CE)the angels of God ascending and descending on (CF)the Son of Man.”
51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
51 Then He said, “I assure you: You(ah) will see heaven opened and the angels of God(BX) ascending and descending(BY) on the Son of Man.”(BZ)
51 Then he told him, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you will see heaven standing open and the angels of God going up and coming down to the Son of Man."
