Jesus Is Raised

1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they went to the sepulchre with the spices they had provided, accompanied by several others.

1 (A)But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.

1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

1 On(A) the first day of the week,(B) very early in the morning, they(a) came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.

1 But at early dawn on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.

2 and having found that the stone had been remov'd from the sepulchre, they entred in,

2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,

2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,

3 but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of (B)the Lord Jesus.

3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

3 They went in but did not find the body(C) of the Lord Jesus.(D)

3 but when they went in, they didn't find the body of the Lord Jesus.

4 whilst they were in great perplexity about it, all of a sudden, two men appear'd before them in robes of light.

4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, (C)two men suddenly (D)stood near them in dazzling clothing;

4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling(E) clothes.

4 While they were puzzling over this, two men in dazzling robes suddenly stood beside them.

5 upon which they were frightned, and bowed themselves to the very ground: but the men said to them, why do you look among the dead for one that is alive?

5 and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead?

5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

5 So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.(b)“Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men.

5 While the women remained terrified, bowing their faces to the ground, the men asked them, "Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is living?

6 he is not here, but is risen: remember what he told you, when he was yet in Galilee,

6 He is not here, but He (E)has (a)risen. Remember how He spoke to you (F)while He was still in Galilee,

6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

6 “He is not here, but He has been resurrected!(F) Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,(G)

6 He is not here, but has been raised. Remember what he told you while he was still in Galilee:

7 that the son of man must be deliver'd into the hands of sinful men; be crucified; and the third day rise again.

7 saying that (G)the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.”

7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be betrayed(H) into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise(I) on the third day’?”

7 "The Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day.'"

8 then they remembred his words;

8 And (H)they remembered His words,

8 And they remembered his words,

8 And they remembered His words.

8 Then the women remembered Jesus' words.

9 and upon their return from the sepulchre, they related the whole matter to the eleven, and all the other disciples.

9 and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.

9 And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

9 Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven(J) and to all the rest.

9 They returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven disciples and all the others.

10 it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and others with them, who gave the apostles this relation:

10 Now they were (I)Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to (J)the apostles.

10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.

10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James,(K) and the other women with them were telling the apostles(L) these things.

10 The women who told the apostles about it were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and some others.

11 which however appear'd to them such a delirious tale, they could not give credit to any of them.

11 But these words appeared (b)to them as nonsense, and they (K)would not believe them.

11 And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.

11 But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe(M) the women.

11 But what they said seemed nonsense to them, so they did not believe them.

12 yet Peter got up, and ran to the sepulchre, where stooping down he saw nothing but the linnen lying there: upon which he went away wondring with himself at such an event.

12 But Peter got up and (L)ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he *saw the linen wrappings (c)only; and he went away (M)to his home, marveling at what had happened.

12 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

12 Peter,(N) however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths.(c)(O) So he went home, amazed(P) at what had happened.

12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. He stooped down and saw only the linen cloths. Then he went home, wondering about what had happened.

Jesus Encountered On The Road To Emmaus

13 The same day two of them went to a village named Emmaus, which was distant about threescore furlongs from Jerusalem:

13 And behold, (N)two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was (d)about seven miles from Jerusalem.

13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

13 Now(Q) that same day two of them were on their way to a village called(d) Emmaus, which was about seven miles(e)(R) from Jerusalem.(S)

13 On the same day, two of Jesus' followers were walking to a village called Emmaus, about 60 stadia from Jerusalem.

14 and their conversation ran upon all that had lately happened.

14 And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place.

14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

14 Together they were discussing everything that had taken place.

14 They were talking with each other about all these things that had taken place.

15 now while they were conferring and debating together, Jesus himself join'd them and walk'd along with them.

15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them.

15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

15 And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus Himself came near and began to walk along with them.

15 While they were discussing and analyzing what had happened, Jesus himself approached and began to walk with them,

16 but their eyes were affected so as not to discern who he was.

16 But (O)their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.

16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

16 But they(f) were prevented from recognizing Him.(T)

16 but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.

17 and he said to them, what is the subject of your debate in the way, and why do you look so sad?

17 And He said to them, “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they stood still, looking sad.

17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

17 Then He asked them, “What is this dispute that you’re having(g) with each other as you are walking?” And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.

17 He asked them, "What are you discussing with each other as you're walking along?" They stood still and looked gloomy.

18 one of them, Cleopas by name, reply'd, are you such a stranger in Jerusalem as not to know what has so lately happen'd there?

18 One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You (e)the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?”

18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

18 The one named Cleopas answered Him, “Are You the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that happened there in these days?”(U)

18 The one whose name was Cleopas answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn't know what happened there in the past few days?"

19 what about? said he. why, about Jesus the Nazarean, said they, who was a prophet, eminently recommended, by his doctrine and his works, to the approbation of God and of all the people;

19 And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things about (P)Jesus the Nazarene, who was a (Q)prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people,

19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

19 “What things?” He asked them.So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene,(V) who was a Prophet(W) powerful in action and speech(X) before God and all the people,(Y)

19 He asked them, "What things?"

20 and of his being deliver'd up by our chief priests and magistrates to be condemn'd to die, whom they actually crucified:

20 and how the chief priests and our (R)rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him.

20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

20 and how our chief priests and leaders(Z) handed Him over to be sentenced to death,(AA) and they crucified Him.(AB)

20 They answered him, "The events involving Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in what he said and did before God and all the people, and how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and had him crucified.

21 though we expected he would have been the Messiah, that was to deliver Israel: and besides all this, it is now three days since these things were done.

21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to (S)redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened.

21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

21 But we were hoping that He was the One who was about to redeem(AC) Israel. Besides all this, it’s the third day(AD) since these things happened.

21 But we kept hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel. What is more, this is now the third day since these things occurred.

22 'tis true, some women of our company threw us into a surprize: for going to the sepulchre early in the morning,

22 But also some women among us amazed us. (T)When they were at the tomb early in the morning,

22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;

22 Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb,

22 Even some of our women have startled us by what they told us. They were at the tomb early this morning

23 and not finding his body there, they came to tell us, that they had seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

23 and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive.

23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

23 and when they didn’t find His body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.

23 and didn't find his body there, so they came back and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who were saying that he was alive.

24 whereupon some of us went to the sepulchre, and found matters just as the women had related; but him they did not see.

24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see.”

24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn’t see Him.”(AE)

24 Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. However, they didn't see him."

25 then Jesus said to them, how stupidly incredulous are you not to believe things that have been all predicted by the prophets!

25 And He said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that (U)the prophets have spoken!

25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

25 He said to them, “How unwise and slow you are to believe in your hearts all that the prophets have spoken!(AF)

25 Then Jesus told them, "O, how foolish you are! How slow you are to believe everything the prophets said!

26 was not the Messiah to have suffer'd thus, and after that enter into his glory?

26 (V)Was it not necessary for the (f)Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?”

26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

26 Didn’t the Messiah have to suffer(AG) these things and enter into His glory?”(AH)

26 The Messiah had to suffer these things and then enter his glory, didn't he?"

27 then beginning at Moses he explain'd all the passages there, and in all the prophets, which related to himself.

27 Then beginning (g)with (W)Moses and (h)with all the (X)prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

27 Then beginning with Moses(AI) and all the Prophets,(AJ) He interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.(AK)

27 Then, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them all the passages of Scripture about himself.

28 and they drew nigh the village where they were going: and he seemed as if he would have pass'd on further.

28 And they approached the village where they were going, and (Y)He acted as though He were going farther.

28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

28 They came near the village where they were going, and He gave the impression that He was going farther.(AL)

28 As they came near the village where the two men were headed, Jesus acted as though he were going farther.

29 but they press'd him, saying, stay with us, for it is late and begins to be dark. so he went in to tarry with them.

29 But they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day (i)is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them.

29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

29 But they urged Him: “Stay with us, because it’s almost evening, and now the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them.

29 But they strongly urged him, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the daylight is nearly gone." So he went in to stay with them.

30 and as he was at table with them, he took bread, and gave thanks, then brake it and gave it to them;

30 When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and (Z)blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them.

30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

30 It was as He reclined at the table with them that He took the bread, blessed and broke(AM) it, and gave it to them.

30 While he was at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed it, broke it in pieces, and gave it to them.

31 when looking upon him more intently, they perceiv'd that it was Jesus. but he vanish'd out of sight.

31 Then their (AA)eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from (j)their sight.

31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

31 Then their eyes were opened,(AN) and they recognized Him, but He disappeared from their sight.(AO)

31 Then their eyes were opened, and they knew who he was. And he vanished from them.

32 Upon this, they said to one another, to what ardor did not our affections rise, while he talk'd with us by the way, and while he expounded to us the scriptures?

32 They said to one another, “(k)Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He (AB)was (l)explaining the Scriptures to us?”

32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

32 So they said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts ablaze within us while He was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures(AP) to us?”

32 Then they asked each other, "Our hearts kept burning within us as he was talking to us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us, didn't they?"

33 and immediately they set out, and return'd to Jerusalem, where they found the eleven, and the rest of their company, all assembled, who said,

33 And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and (AC)found gathered together the eleven and (AD)those who were with them,

33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

33 That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven(AQ) and those with them gathered together,

33 They got up right away, went back to Jerusalem, and found the eleven disciples and their companions all together.

34 the Lord is actually risen, and hath appeared to Simon.

34 saying, “(AE)The Lord has really risen and (AF)has appeared to Simon.”

34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

34 who said,(h) “The Lord has certainly been raised, and has appeared to Simon!”(AR)

34 They kept saying, "The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon!"

Jesus Appears To The Disciples

35 Thereupon the two disciples related what had hapned on the road, and how they first discover'd who Jesus was at his breaking of bread.

35 They began to relate (m)their experiences on the road and how (AG)He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

35 Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.(AS)

35 Then the two men began to tell what had happened on the road and how they had recognized him when he broke the bread in pieces.

Jesus Appears To His Disciples

36 While they were thus talking, Jesus himself appear'd in the midst of them, and said to them, peace be with you.

36 While they were telling these things, (AH)He Himself stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace be to you.”

36 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

36 And(AT) as they were saying these things, He Himself stood among them. He said to them, “Peace(AU) to you!”

36 While they were all talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and told them, "Peace be with you."

37 but they were in a consternation and fright, imagining, that they saw a spirit.

37 But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing (AI)a spirit.

37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

37 But they were startled and terrified(AV) and thought they were seeing a ghost.(AW)

37 They were startled and terrified, thinking they were seeing a ghost.

38 upon which he said to them, why are you in this confusion? what is it, that your minds are so perplex'd?

38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your (n)hearts?

38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

38 “Why are you troubled?”(AX) He asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts?

38 But Jesus told them, "What's frightening you? And why are you doubting?

39 behold my hands, and my feet. for I am bodily present, touch me and consider me; for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see me have:

39 (AJ)See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; (AK)touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”

39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

39 Look at My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself!(AY) Touch Me and see,(AZ) because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”

39 Look at my hands and my feet, because it's really me. Touch me and look at me, because a ghost doesn't have flesh and bones as you see that I have."

40 all the while holding out his hands and his feet, as he was speaking.

40 And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.

40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

40 Having said this, He showed them His hands and feet.

40 After he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

41 but as they were diffident of so joyful an event, and still in amaze, he said to them, have you any thing here to eat?

41 While they still (o)(AL)could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, (AM)Have you anything here to eat?”

41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?

41 But while they still were amazed and unbelieving because of their joy, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

41 Even though they were still skeptical due to their joy and astonishment, Jesus asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"

42 and they gave him a piece of broil'd fish, and of a honey-comb;

42 They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish;

42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.

42 So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish,(i)

42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,

43 which he took, and did eat in their presence.

43 and He took it and (AN)ate it before them.

43 And he took it, and did eat before them.

43 and He took it and ate in their presence.

43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

Jesus Commissions His Disciples

44 then he said, this is what I told you, while I was yet with you, that what has been written concerning me in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the psalms, must be all accomplished.

44 Now He said to them, (AO)These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the (AP)Law of Moses and the Prophets and (AQ)the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

44 Then He told them, “These are My words(BA) that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets,(BB) and the Psalms(BC) must be fulfilled.”

44 Then he told them, "These are the words that I spoke to you while I was still with you that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms had to be fulfilled."

45 then he open'd their minds to make them understand the scriptures, and said to them,

45 Then He (AR)opened their (p)minds to understand the Scriptures,

45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

45 Then He opened their minds(BD) to understand(BE) the Scriptures.

45 Then he opened their minds so that they might understand the Scriptures.

46 thus it is written, and thus it behov'd Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

46 and He said to them, (AS)Thus it is written, that the (q)Christ would suffer and (AT)rise again from the dead the third day,

46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

46 He also said to them, “This is what is written:(j) The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day,(BF)

46 He told them, "This is how it is written: the Messiah was to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,

47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preach'd in his name, among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

47 and that (AU)repentance (r)for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed (s)in His name to (AV)all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

47 and repentance for(k) forgiveness of sins(BG) would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations,(BH) beginning at Jerusalem.(BI)

47 and then repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48 you are witnesses of these things.

48 You are (AW)witnesses of these things.

48 And ye are witnesses of these things.

48 You are witnesses(BJ) of these things.

48 You are witnesses of these things.

49 and I am going to send you what my father has promis'd you. but continue in the city of Jerusalem, until you shall be endued with power from on high.

49 And behold, (AX)I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but (AY)you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

49 And look, I am sending you(l) what My Father promised.(BK) As for you, stay in the city(m) until you are empowered(n)(BL) from on high.”

49 I am sending to you what my Father promised, so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

The Ascension

50 At length he led them out as far as Bethany; and stretching out his hands, he gave them his benediction.

50 And He led them out as far as (AZ)Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.

50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

50 Then He led them out as far as Bethany,(BM) and lifting up His hands(BN) He blessed them.

50 Later, he led them out as far as Bethany, lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

51 and while he was blessing them, he was taken from them, and carried up into heaven.

51 While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.

51 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

51 And while He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.(BO)

51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.

52 and they worship'd him, and with great joy return'd to Jerusalem,

52 And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:

52 After worshiping Him,(BP) they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.(BQ)

52 They worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy.

53 where they daily praised and blessed God in the temple.

53 and were continually in the temple (t)praising God.

53 And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.

53 And they were continually in the temple complex praising God.(o)(BR)

53 They were continually in the Temple, blessing God.
