Psalm 81

A Call To Obedience

1 Sing for joy to God our strength; Shout joyfully to the God of Jacob.

1 {To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of Asaph.} Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.

1 Sing joyfully to God, our strength. Raise a shout to the God of Jacob.

1 Sing aloud to God our Strength! Shout for joy to the God of Jacob!

2 Raise a song, strike the timbrel, The sweet sounding lyre with the harp.

2 Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery.

2 Sing a song and play the tambourine, the pleasant-sounding lyre along with the harp.

2 Raise a song, sound the timbrel, the sweet lyre with the harp.

3 Blow the trumpet at the new moon, At the full moon, on our feast day.

3 Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.

3 Blow the ram's horn when there is a New Moon, when there is a full moon, on our festival day,

3 Blow the trumpet at the New Moon, at the full moon, on our feast day.

4 For it is a statute for Israel, An ordinance of the God of Jacob.

4 For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.

4 because it is a statute in Israel, an ordinance by the God of Jacob,

4 For this is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.

5 He established it for a testimony in Joseph When he went throughout the land of Egypt I heard a language that I did not know:

5 This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not.

5 a decree that he prescribed for Joseph when he went throughout the land of Egypt, speaking a language I did not recognize.

5 This He ordained in Joseph [the savior] for a testimony when He went out over the land of Egypt. The speech of One Whom I knew not did I hear [saying],

6 "I relieved his shoulder of the burden, His hands were freed from the basket.

6 I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots.

6 I removed the burden from your shoulder; your hands were freed of the burdensome basket.

6 I removed his shoulder from the burden; his hands were freed from the basket.

7 "You called in trouble and I rescued you; I answered you in the hiding place of thunder; I proved you at the waters of Meribah. Selah.

7 Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah.

7 In a time of need you called out and I delivered you; I answered you from the dark thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Interlude

7 You called in distress and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

8 "Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you; O Israel, if you would listen to Me!

8 Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me;

8 Listen, My people and I will warn you. Israel, if only you would obey me!

8 Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you -- "O Israel, if you would listen to Me!

9 "Let there be no strange god among you; Nor shall you worship any foreign god.

9 There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.

9 You must neither have a foreign god over you or worship a strange god.

9 There shall no strange god be among you, neither shall you worship any alien god.

10 "I, the LORD, am your God, Who brought you up from the land of Egypt; Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.

10 I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, open your mouth that I may fill it.

10 I am the Lord your God, Who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.

11 "But My people did not listen to My voice, And Israel did not obey Me.

11 But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.

11 Yet my people didn't obey my voice; Israel didn't submit to me.

11 But My people would not hearken to My voice, and Israel would have none of Me.

12 "So I gave them over to the stubbornness of their heart, To walk in their own devices.

12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

12 So I allowed them to continue in their stubbornness, living by their own advice.

12 So I gave them up to their own hearts' lust and let them go after their own stubborn will, that they might follow their own counsels.

13 "Oh that My people would listen to Me, That Israel would walk in My ways!

13 Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!

13 If only my people would obey me, if only Israel would walk in my ways!

13 Oh, that My people would listen to Me, that Israel would walk in My ways!

14 "I would quickly subdue their enemies And turn My hand against their adversaries.

14 I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.

14 Then I would quickly subdue their enemies. I would turn against their foes.

14 Speedily then I would subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their adversaries.

15 "Those who hate the LORD would pretend obedience to Him, And their time of punishment would be forever.

15 The haters of the LORD should have submitted themselves unto him: but their time should have endured for ever.

15 Those who hate the LORD will cringe before him; their punishment will be permanent.

15 [Had Israel listened to Me in Egypt, then] those who hated the Lord would have come cringing before Him, and their defeat would have lasted forever.

16 "But I would feed you with the finest of the wheat, And with honey from the rock I would satisfy you."

16 He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.

16 But I will feed Israel with the finest wheat, satisfying you with honey from the rock. A Psalm of Asaph

16 [God] would feed [Israel now] also with the finest of the wheat; and with honey out of the rock would I satisfy you.
