What theologians speak of as the 'decrees of God,' and describe as one, immutable, eternal, all-embracing, free, etc., do not receive this designation in Scripture. The equivalents are to be sought for under such headings as Election, Predestination, Providence, Reprobate. In the English Version the term is frequently used in Esther, Ezra, Daniel, with different Heb. and Aramaic words, for royal decrees (in Da 6 RV 'interdict'; in Da 2:9 RV 'law,' elsewhere 'decree'). I will declare the decree: Jehovah hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; I this day have begotten thee.
He laid the earth upon its foundations: it shall not be removed for ever.
Thou hast set a bound which they may not pass over, that they turn not again to cover the earth.
Quicken me according to thy loving-kindness, and I will keep the testimony of thy mouth. LAMED. For ever, O Jehovah, thy word is settled in the heavens. read more. And he established them for ever and ever; he made for them a statute which shall not pass.
when he imposed on the sea his decree that the waters should not pass his commandment, when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
Will ye not fear me? saith Jehovah. Will ye not tremble at my presence, who have set the sand a bound for the sea by a perpetual decree, and it shall not pass it? and its waves toss themselves, but they do not prevail; and they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
but if ye do not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you; for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me its interpretation.
This sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the decision by the word of the holy ones: that the living may know that the Most High ruleth over the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.
this is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which cometh upon my lord the king:
